We have a great opportunity for an experienced Manager to lead out our Project Management Team supporting Hydro and Geothermal asset projects.


The Projects Management Team are solution focused leaders in projects engineering and management, employing strategic decision making and innovative problem solving to deliver exceptional results.

This is an integral role where you will provide dynamic and effective leadership and management to enable successful delivery of the Generation portfolio of projects.

Critical to this is the development of core capability knowledge within your team to build future resilience of the industry within New Zealand.


You'll be involved in delivering major projects to protect and enhance Mercury's renewable generation assets in the central North Island.

The Project Team will be responsible for delivering major projects to capture carbon which will be part of shifting the dial to lower New Zealand's carbon emissions as we strongly support and play a leading role in New Zealand's successful transition to a low carbon economy.

This role has the flexibility to be based in either Rotorua or Hamilton.

The key elements of the Project Management Team (PMT) Manager role are:


  • Leadership: Develop a high-performance culture that people want to be part of. Act as the project sponsor for certain projects creating the governance structure and driving and supporting performance. Support generation as a constructive member of the Generation Project Lead Team. A leader of safety.

Portfolio Delivery: Help set-up the generation portfolio of projects for success and monitor and support the safe delivery of high value projects (end to end) in line with company strategic objectives, stakeholder requirements and project value metrics. Ensure that the team has sufficient forward planning resourcing.

Relationship Management: Own the relationship with key stakeholders, contractors and suppliers that enables the delivery of the generation portfolio of projects. Ensure the relationship with operations, maintenance and asset management is maintained and that a high value service is provided. Ensure that relationships are in place with supporting consultants to ensure the internal Mercury team set can be supported by contractor engineer, design, project management, construction management support as required.

Learning: Actively contribute to the development of best-in-class project delivery frameworks, developing the knowledge and capability of the team and enhancing the knowledge and understanding of the business.

We are looking for:

  • Degree or higher diploma in Engineering, Project Management or a related discipline
  • Minimum 15 years' experience managing significant engineering or technical projects in a heavy industry environment
  • Experience leading a multidisciplinary team with the ability to develop and coach people
  • Proven ability to manage complex multidiscipline projects involving major contracts, contractors, consultants and global suppliers
  • Experience in the electricity generation preferable
