Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand Transpower Full time

Would you like to work in an organisation providing infrastructure that is critical to meeting the Government's net zero carbon objectives?
Transpower is New Zealand's National Grid operator. We take a whole-of-industry view of the electricity sector and operate the system on behalf of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Our strategy, Transmission Tomorrow, shows how we're working to deliver the renewable, electrified, low-carbon economy set out in Whakamana I Te Mauri Hiko - Empowering our Energy Future.

This includes influencing environmental policy and plan provisions required to meet that challenge by looking after the assets we already have, and planning for how the National Grid will contribute to electrification of the economy in the future - all while carefully managing our effects on the environment and maintaining our social licence to operate.

About the team
Our Environmental Regulatory Team sits within Transpower's Environmental Policy and Planning Group (EPPG) and is responsible for:

  • Delivering Transpower's strategic resource management policy including striving to secure provisions in district and regional plans and policy statements across New Zealand that give effect to the National Policy Statement on Electricity Transmission;
  • Obtaining all necessary environmental approvals for major projects/new build projects; and
  • Responding to enquiries about development proposals in the vicinity of National Grid assets.

About the opportunity
We have a permanent opportunity for a Senior Planner to join the team as a Technical Lead (Major Projects).

Based in Wellington or Christchurch, you'll provide project leadership and support to the Environmental Regulatory Team Leader and Environmental Policy and Planning Manager, primarily in relation to obtaining approvals for large, complex projects (both Transpower projects and Customer projects e.g. electricity generation companies wanting to connect to the National Grid).

You'll act as a key conduit between the EPPG Senior Leadership Team, EPPG team members, other key roles and teams within Transpower, and of course our external stakeholders.

Over the past 12 months Transpower has received over 100 new customer connection requests, so there is no shortage of work in our pipeline

What you'll bring
With a minimum of 10 years' of project-based planning experience, complimented by a tertiary degree in resource management, environmental planning or another field (e.g. geography, environmental science), you will be comfortable tackling complex consenting and designation processes, including alternatives assessments, preferably within the energy and/or infrastructure sectors. It is desirable that you're a member of NZPI (intermediate or full).

You'll be naturally inquisitive and comfortable influencing and offering expert advice, both at a technical and non-technical level, with audiences such as Service Providers, Consultants, Customers, Regulatory Authorities, Māori (iwi/hapu/mana whenua), Developers and Landowners.

You will also work closely with a wide range of Transpower staff including Engineers, Project Managers, Legal Counsel and Communications.

This is a high visibility role.

A full position description is available below or via our website: Careers | Transpower

To be considered, your CV and cover letter will demonstrate:

  • Proven planning experience in project environments
  • Experience in securing consents, designations and other environmental approvals for large energy/infrastructure projects in New Zealand
  • Experience in Council and consenting processes, including public meetings, Council hearings and Environment Court mediation.
  • Effective and engaging relationship management skills
  • A general understanding of the nature and design of New Zealand's electricity industry. (desirable)
  • Experience working with/for a large infrastructure provider (desirable)

Why you should join us
We stand together for New Zealand - Tū mai Aotearoa - to enable a better tomorrow.

Next Steps

Role closes Sunday 26 March. Applications will be reviewed as they are received, and reasonable accommodation is available to enable exploratory conversations and/or interview scheduling to suit your individual circumstances.

NB:
Existing eligibility to work in New Zealand, with the qualifications specified above, is a requirement.
