Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand Transpower Full time

Be part of an organisation that provides infrastructure that is critical to meeting the Government's net zero carbon objectives

Transpower's strategy, Transmission Tomorrow, shows how we're working to deliver the renewable, electrified, low-carbon economy set out in Whakamana I Te Mauri Hiko - Empowering our Energy Future.

This includes influencing environmental legislation, policy and plan provisions required to meet that challenge by looking after the assets we already have, as well as securing environmental approvals to enable the construction of new national grid assets, including connections for our customers, - all while carefully managing our effects on the environment and maintaining our social licence to operate.

About the team
Our Environmental Regulatory Team sits within the Environmental Policy and Planning Group (EPPG), and is responsible for:

  • Delivering Transpower's strategic resource management policy including striving to secure provisions in Council plans across New Zealand that give effect to the National Policy Statement on Electricity Transmission;
  • Obtaining all necessary environmental approvals for major projects; and
  • Responding to enquiries about development proposals in the vicinity of National Grid assets.

About the opportunity

We're seeking an experienced Senior Planner to provide project leadership and policy support to the Environmental Policy and Planning Manager, the Environmental Regulatory Team Leader and other members of the EPPG in planning matters contributing to the achievement of Transpower's strategic objectives.

Your technical expertise and mentorship will be invaluable as you deliver all necessary environmental approvals for complex Customer and Transpower projects and provide day-to-day planning oversight and management of these project deliverables.

Your experience in preparing and presenting evidence for Council and Environment Court hearings, as well as your prior involvement in Environment Court mediation processes, will enable you to assist EPPG with our large policy workload across most districts of New Zealand.

About you
With a minimum of 7 years of planning experience, complimented by a tertiary degree in resource management, environmental planning or another field (e.g. geography, environmental science), you're energised by taking on complex consenting and designation processes, including alternatives assessments, preferably within the energy and/or infrastructure sectors.

A naturally inquisitive and engaging person, you're comfortable influencing and offering expert advice, both at a technical and non-technical level, to audiences such as Service Providers, Consultants, Customers, Regulatory Authorities, Māori (iwi/hapu/mana whenua), Developers and Landowners.

You will also work closely with a wide range of Transpower staff including Engineers, Project Managers, Legal Counsel and Communications Advisors.

To be considered, your CV and cover letter will demonstrate:

years' experience related to planning / policy development / resource management / project consenting

  • Demonstrated experience in problem solving and identifying solutions in a complex commercial context
  • Proven ability to facilitate discussions with stakeholders with opposing/different views and reach consensus
  • Ability to tailor communications to the intended audience
  • Understanding of the relevant legislation, particularly the Resource Management Act
  • A tertiary qualification in planning, policy, resource management or similar

Join us at Transpower
