Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

The Commercial Division provides flexible procurement services to support the Ministry's strategic goals, aid programme and service improvement initiatives. We focus on delivering great outcomes through collaborative approaches and establishing strong business relationships.

As one of our Senior Commercial Advisers you will provide strategic customer and supplier relationship management, driving innovation and delivering broader outcomes for New Zealand.


  • Partner with Ministry staff to understand their objectives and design innovative commercial strategies
  • Provide high quality and consistent commercial advice to Ministry staff
  • Deliver commercial transactions through external parties such as suppliers, NGOs, partners and government or international organisations.
  • Deliver on broader outcomes such as increasing access for Māori and Pacific business, localisation, and reducing emissions and waste.
  • Mentor and guide your colleagues in the wider Commercial Division

The full salary range for this role is $104,670 and $141,612 total remuneration, inclusive of our 3% KiwiSaver employer contribution.

We'd like to hear from you if you are an experienced commercial practitioner with the following skills and experience:

  • Sound infrastructure commercial and procurement experience
  • Extensive experience in relationship building and proactive customer service
  • Excellent communication skills with strong ability to convey complex information logically and concisely
  • Proven experience in developing commercial strategies, problem solving and use of analytical skills to solve business issues


Ideally you will also have a good understanding of tikanga (Māori customs and protocols), with the ability to weave te ao Māori (the Māori worldview) into your work.


If you are just starting on this journey that's OK too - as long as you have a willingness to learn and a desire to develop your cultural capability.
