Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity

We have an important role in supporting the Crown in its relationships with Māori under te Tiriti o Waitangi | the Treaty of Waitangi. The government is committed to improving services and outcomes for Māori and strengthening the Crown's relationships with Māori.

We are responsible for designing community-based systems of care, agreeing health and wellbeing plans, executing those plans, and monitoring outcomes which then feed into the design process. We work in partnership with our Te Whatu Ora colleagues to shape system-wide public health services across the motu.

The System Design Manager, Addictions is tasked with the system and service design across the whole addictions portfolio. In this role you will take a big picture view and work strategically to create a system that aims to radically improve Māori Health and eliminate inequities. The System Design Manager has strong problem solving and systems thinking skills, including change and influence skills.

  • Demonstrated experience in leading system and service design and implementation in the particular life course, including seeking lived experience and or whānau voice and aspirations.
  • Can demonstrate system thinking and problem solving that delivers collaborative, equity-based solutions.
  • Experience influencing highly skilled, high performing and engaged professional teams in a multi-faceted and demanding environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of high quality and timely strategies and initiatives across a large organisation.
  • Demonstrated experience for developing, maintaining and influencing relationships and partnerships across sectors and organisations including clinicians, health providers, and Māori and Pacific Peoples groups
  • Demonstrated ability to think conceptually and anticipate the impact of decisions on long-term outcomes, including financial outcomes, and develop/recommend responses in consultation with key stakeholders.
  • The ability to compellingly communicate complex information and ideas in both oral and written communication to a range of audiences including senior management, Board and Ministers.
  • Experience navigating and operating in a regulated environment, experience working constructively across functions and track record of building and maintaining the trust of all stakeholders.

Nau mai, uru mai | Come and join us

When you join us, you become part of transforming the health system. This is a once in a life-time change, which will touch the lives of everyone in Aotearoa for generations.

Our name, Te Whatu Ora, means 'the weaving of wellness'. Whatu is the combining of people, resources, organisations, thoughts and actions for the betterment and wellbeing of all. Whatu is also a direct reference to the pupil of the eye, and the vision required of the new entity and system.

We are working towards a system that better meets the complex demands of a growing population, addresses the persistent inequalities experienced by Māori and ensures improved access, experience and outcomes for those traditionally not well served by the system - Māori, Pacific and Disabled People.

We want to see the real you in your application and welcome the real you on board if you come and work with us. Skills are gained across many areas of our lives, not just in formal employment. If you can demonstrate the skills listed in the ad, but the experience was gained through whānau life, community or mahi aroha (volunteering) we encourage you to apply and share your story with us in your cover letter. We particularly welcome applications from our diverse Māori, Pacific, disabled, and rainbow communities.
