Christchurch Central, New Zealand Desktop Technology Services Ltd Full time NZ$60,000 - NZ$120,000 per year

About the Role

We're looking for a capable Intermediate Network Engineer who thrives in both independent and team environments. You'll join a small, close-knit technical team responsible for designing, deploying, and supporting networks across a wide range of environments - from highly standardised ("cookie-cutter") branch sites to complex, high-availability key infrastructure networks.

This role offers significant scope for growth including development toward ISP-level engineering, network automation, and advanced wireless and switching technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Configure, deploy, and support enterprise-grade switching, routing, and wireless networks.
  • Configure and support Fortinet Firewalls & associated systems including Fortimanager and Fortianalizer.
  • Perform troubleshooting and fault resolution for production environments.
  • Participate in the design and documentation of new site builds and upgrades.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records in NetBox and internal systems.
  • Contribute to network automation and scripting initiatives (Python-based).
  • Collaborate closely with a small, skilled team - while also working effectively unsupervised.
  • Provide clear written and verbal communication to colleagues and clients.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call or after-hours roster where required.

Essential Skills & Attributes

  • Excellent written and verbal communication - ability to document clearly and explain complex topics simply.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy in all aspects of work.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team.
  • Solid understanding of Layer 2/3 networking fundamentals and troubleshooting.
  • Hands-on experience with enterprise switching and wireless networks.
  • Hands-on experience with firewall rulesets.
  • Familiarity with VLANs, spanning tree, DHCP, DNS, and basic routing protocols.

Preferred Experience

  • Vendor certification (e.g., Aruba, Cisco, Fortinet, or equivalent) — Aruba & Fortinet experience highly regarded.
  • Exposure to Aruba Central, Aruba CX, Fortinet and Mikrotik environments.
  • Basic understanding of network automation or scripting (Python preferred).
  • Working knowledge of NetBox or similar network source-of-truth platforms.
  • Experience with VoIP systems or unified communications.

Why Join Us

  • Work on both routine deployments and challenging infrastructure projects.
  • Be part of a high functioning, supportive team that values learning and autonomy.
  • Opportunities for career growth toward senior or ISP-level engineering.
  • Exposure to diverse technologies across switching, wireless, security, automation, and voice.
