Senior Consents Planner

An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced Senior Planner to take a strategic role with a progressive South Island council. Join a team that values collaboration, community, and innovation, delivering real outcomes in land use, development, and environmental planning.
The Role
You'll oversee land use and subdivision consents, notices of requirement, and outline plans under the RMA, providing high-level technical expertise and leadership to ensure efficient, compliant decision-making. You'll mentor and guide planning officers, support professional development, and foster a collaborative, high-performing team culture. You'll also contribute to district plan reviews, policy development, and submissions on regional and national planning matters.
- Manage and approve complex resource consents, ensuring legal and policy alignment
- Provide expert planning advice to elected members, staff, and stakeholders
- Represent Council at hearings and Environment Court with evidence-based positions
- Contribute to district plan reviews, long-term strategy, and process improvements
About You
You're a confident planner with strong technical knowledge and experience in resource management, either in local government or consultancy. You lead with sound judgment, political awareness, and a pragmatic approach.
- Tertiary qualification in Planning, Resource Management, or related discipline (NZPI eligible)
- Minimum 5 years' planning or policy experience, ideally with consent management exposure
- Strong RMA and local government knowledge, with hearings or court experience
- Skilled communicator, capable of influencing teams and communities
