The Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu nomination and appointment process is being undertaken to appoint a Ngāi Tahu representative to the Canterbury Museum Trust Board.

Purpose of the Canterbury Museum Trust

  • The Canterbury Museum Trust Board is an ad hoc local authority established under the Canterbury Museum Trust Board Act 1993.
  • The functions of the Board are to:

  • Appoint a Chief Executive who is to be appointed as Director of the Museum.

  • Establish for the guidance of the Director, broad lines of policy consistent with the objectives of the Museum.
  • Ensure that the Museum building, collections and documentation are maintained in good order and condition.
  • Ensure that the Museum is run effectively and efficiently in accordance with its policy.

Purpose of the role
The purpose of this role is to represent the Ngāi Tahu perspective to the Canterbury Museum Trust ensuring that any issues of tribal significance are reported to Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu while also ensuring that tribal matters of significance are represented to the Trust.

Required Skills, Experience And Qualifications
The appointee will, preferably, have knowledge/expertise in several of the following areas:

  • Ability to see the wide perspective and think strategically.
  • Organisational and structural awareness.
  • Critical faculty: ability to probe facts, challenge assumptions, identify drawbacks and advantages of proposals.
  • Honest and willingness to be accountable.
  • Awareness of the obligations placed on the Museum as a statutory body under the Treaty of Waitangi.
  • Bi-cultural awareness
  • Multi-cultural awareness.
  • Awareness of major external influences on the Museum and environment including political, economic, social and technological issues.
  • Special knowledge: Awareness of any strategic, cultural, scientific or other issues that may impact on the particular operation of the Museum.
  • Understanding of the community's expectations.
  • Corporate governance.
  • Financial management /financial oversight.

One Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu Representative.

Meeting details
11 meetings per year from February to December. Meetings are usually held from 2.00pm on the second Monday of the month at the Canterbury Museum. Remuneration of $250 per hui paid by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu.
