This role plays a key role in supporting the New Zealand Council (NZC) and our Chief Operating Officer (COO)in meeting their strategic objectives, providing solutions-focused advice to ensure NZC's governance is conducted effectively and responsibly.

You will support the operational planning process for NZC and regions, manage the OIA requirements and lead work programmes in relation to the Conservation and Wildlife Act

Gamebird and Freshwater Fishing notices and regulations need, on an annual basis, to be developed, finalised, approved and gazetted.  Your role is to oversee the delivery of these including liaising with Fish & Game Regional Councils, the Department of Conservation and the Ministers Office to ensure all steps in the process meet requirements.

The NZC comprises members from each region, all of whom are volunteers.  Providing excellent support for the Council meetings across the year, including quality papers designed for decision making, a smooth running of the council meetings, easily accessible documents and effective minute taking is a prime accountability. It does not stop there; post the meeting minutes are finalised and actions required for your colleagues disseminated, providing support where needed.

The NZC is a team of eight people, some of whom reside in other parts of NZ, so the ability to be comfortable with online meetings and conversing via email is essential.  Despite some of the distance, the team is tight and supports each other across work programmes and planning. There is a continuing need to uplift capability across the team and support governance to also uplift skills and ensure their knowledge of accountabilities

You will need

  • policy project management skills,
  • tertiary qualifications preferably in environment, resource management or regulatory policy and compliance areas
  • Knowledge and capability with a range of up-to-date frameworks, principles tools and methods
  • Political awareness, understanding of different perspectives and able to manage differences of views
  • Able to deal comfortably with uncertainty and be able to make innovative, practical and durable recommendations even without the total picture
