About the Role

Starboard is a mission-centric SaaS platform. We process billions of data points to help nations and analysts understand what is happening at sea—in real-time. Whether it's identifying "dark vessels" avoiding detection or supporting biosecurity at our borders, our work bridges the gap between complex data and real-world action.

We are looking for
Intermediate Backend Engineers
to join our crew in Wellington.

You will move beyond just "taking tickets." You will operate at the team level—executing on features, managing your backlog, and understanding
why
a feature matters to a fisheries analyst or a defence operator.

What You'll Do

  • Build & Design:
    Design and implement scalable, secure microservices in
    Go (Golang)
    .
  • Solve Real Problems:
    Apply technical "good taste" to solve complex challenges involving geospatial data, identity management, or large-scale infrastructure.
  • Collaborate:
    Participate actively in code reviews, technical planning, and retrospectives.
  • Own Your Work:
    Proactively manage tasks, communicate progress, and help improve our developer tooling and processes.

What You'll Bring

  • Backend Experience:
    You have a track record of delivering production-grade software.
  • The Tech Stack:

  • Note: If you are a strong backend engineer in another language (Python, Java, Rust) with a serious desire to cross-train into Go, we want to hear from you.
  • Good Taste:
    You write code that is maintainable, testable, and secure.
  • Startup Mindset:
    You are comfortable finding clarity in uncertainty and driving tasks to completion.

Bonus Skills (Nice to Haves)
We are hiring across teams with different technical focuses. Experience in any of the following is a plus:

  • Identity/IAM concepts.
  • Kubernetes (K8s) or containerized environments.
  • GCP (Google Cloud Platform) and Terraform (IaC).
  • CI/CD tooling and Policy as Code.
