Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand New Zealand Government Full time NZ$132,628 per year

About us

The Electricity Authority Te Mana Hiko is an independent Crown entity that regulates the electricity market. We are a kaitiaki of electricity, and our purpose is to enhance New Zealanders' lives, prosperity, and environment through electricity.

The electricity industry is at a pivotal moment, with the journey towards renewable energy sources and innovation reshaping how we operate for the long-term benefit of consumers.

It's an exciting time to join the Authority as we grow our capabilities, expand our reach, build a team ready to empower consumers, boost market competition, and strengthen future networks. Our focus is on making a difference by driving through a bold, collaborative work programme and delivering value for the communities we serve.

About the role

As a regulatory or policy professional, the focus of your role will be on using your understanding of economic frameworks to provide advice on network pricing issues that sit at the heart of the challenge for New Zealand to electrify affordably and sustainably.

Our work spans across the electricity transmission and distribution sectors - shaping policy and regulation for network pricing issues such as connection pricing policies for load and generation, promotion of pricing that enables businesses and consumers to use electricity and invest efficiently, and stewardship for the New Zealand Transmission Pricing Methodology.

You will work on a variety of interesting projects and engage directly with sector participants and senior decision-makers at the Authority. You will lead thinking and stakeholder engagement to develop insights into pricing issues in the evolving electricity networks sector and play an important role in implementing and evolving the New Zealand Transmission Pricing Methodology.

Our ideal candidate

You'll bring:

  • A relevant qualification in economics, public policy, law, engineering, finance, or a related discipline
  • Previous experience in policy, regulatory, or economic roles - ideally in the energy or infrastructure sectors
  • Strong policy writing skills, including the ability to prepare clear and concise briefings and formal advice for senior stakeholders
  • Proven ability to produce high-quality, evidence-based work, often within complex or ambiguous problem spaces
  • Experience engaging with industry, government, iwi, or community stakeholders
  • Familiarity with electricity sector dynamics and participant incentives (preferred, but not essential)

Why work with us?

Electricity plays a critical role in the quality of our lives and businesses. As an electricity kaitiaki our work is diverse, intellectually challenging, and contributes directly to our communities, economy, environment, and the nation.

We are a small but growing high-impact organisation where talented individuals can make a real difference. We foster an open, collaborative environment that encourages quality, innovation, ongoing learning, and knowledge sharing.

We support a healthy work-life balance and offer a range of benefits to support our teams:

  • Competitive remuneration from $132,628
  • Flexible working options
