About the Role
We have a twelve-month, fixed-term Clinical Fellowship with the Department of Adult and Emergency Anaesthesia at Auckland City Hospital, commencing in February 2026.
This fellowship provides the opportunity to gain subspecialty experience in Pain Anaesthesia and to develop proficiency in delivering high-quality anaesthetic care for patients with acute and chronic pain undergoing both elective and emergency surgical procedures.
You will be involved in the management of complex cases referred from across New Zealand. The position is primarily clinical, with dedicated sessions available under the supervision of the Pain Team and TARPS within the Department of Anaesthesia

About you
Ideally, you are likely to be either nearing the end of your training, or have recently completed a formal anaesthesia training programme, but seeking additional structured training. This role is not suitable for applicants who are more than 12 months post FANZCA or equivalent qualification, or for anyone with provisional specialist registration.
You will be either registered or be eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Please note you will be required to provide source verification of your qualifications for your registration application.

You will be mentored and encouraged to develop a consultant approach to patient assessment and the conduct of anaesthesia, as well as having the opportunity to develop and improve teaching, audit and research skills.
We also offer a wide range of opportunities to learn new clinical skills, such as ultrasound-guided regional blockade, and exposure to sophisticated pre-operative assessment techniques. The posts are recognised for the provisional fellowship year (PFY) for the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA).
