Job Description
Do you have a deep passion for crafting high-quality journalism that enriches our communities? We're on the lookout for an enthusiastic Journalist to join our team as a Local Democracy Reporter.

You will be covering local authorities' decisions and other civic matters, as well as going out and talking to the people affected, sharing their stories, and uncovering other stories of your own.

We are looking for someone with as many of the following qualities as possible. You don't need all of these to apply, but you will need to have at least a year's experience in daily news journalism.

This role is fast-paced with each day offering new challenges.

  • Building and cultivating trusted contacts to deliver exclusive stories
  • Using social media, including Neighbourly and other third parties to drive community and audience
  • Finding new ways of telling stories already in the mainstream media
  • Unearthing local democracy stories all New Zealanders will want to read
  • Applicants will need to develop a comprehensive understanding of local body politics and manage agendas from multiple councils across Northern Waikato.

This is a fast paced role where no two days are the same. To succeed you will need:

  • Strong journalism skills, including the ability to write, self-edit, take pictures and shoot basic videos
  • To be a self-starter, able to work in a sole charge capacity
  • Ability to report on local democracy and translate this into content readers will care about
  • Excellent time management and the ability to deliver several stories a day
  • A strong social media presence
  • A full drivers licence
  • The ability to protect a positive, safe and inclusive workplace

If you're ready to make an impact in the world of journalism and share our commitment to delivering quality news, we invite you to consider this exciting opportunity with us. Your skills and dedication can help shape the future of journalism in Aotearoa.
