Wellington Central, Wellington, New Zealand Office of the Auditor-General Full time NZ$80,000 - NZ$120,000 per year

Data Engineer (12-month fixed term)

The Office of the Auditor-General | Te Mana Arotake aims to improve trust and confidence in public services by giving New Zealanders an independent view of government spending and performance. As the statutory auditor of all public organisations, from councils to schools, the Auditor-General's work plays a major part in ensuring that our public sector remains one of the most trusted in the world.

We're looking for an experienced Snowflake and data build tool (dbt) Data Engineer to join our Data and Analytics team. You'll play a key role in a programme focused on providing the data foundations, advanced analytics, and data sharing capability for the Office of the Auditor-General and Audit New Zealand.

About the role

This is a 12-month fixed-term position in the implementation team for our new data and analytics platform. The role would suit someone keen to set up our new Snowflake data platform and transform our data and analytics capability. As a Data Engineer, you will have experience with all types of structured and unstructured data and be responsible for building and maintaining data pipelines that cross multiple domains.

You'll work closely with the Data Platform and Integration Lead, Analytics Engineer, and Analytical Product Lead to:

  • develop and implement an organisational domain data model; and
  • build data pipelines and implement data governance practice; and
  • contribute to the evolution of our data architecture and engineering best practices.

To succeed in this role, you'll have:

  • Strong experience in ELT development and CI/CD practice, ideally in data and analytics or technology-focused programmes.
  • Proficiency in SQL, Jinja, and Python.
  • Strong data governance, management, and quality practices.
  • A drive to ensure that New Zealand's public entities are spending taxpayers' money effectively and efficiently.

Ideally, you'll also have a good knowledge of:

  • financial data and non-financial performance data;
  • the machinery of government and its accountability mechanisms and audit; and
  • experience in New Zealand's public sector.

We offer our staff:

  • Ongoing learning and professional development opportunities.
  • Supportive hybrid working arrangements (flexible hours/days).
  • Health and well-being benefits.
