Reserving Actuary
As a proud Kiwi-owned insurer, we take pride in challenging the status quo – and move fast to make things happen. We're here to create beautifully simple, rewarding experiences for our customers and communities, and we're working hard to protect the future of Aotearoa.
At its heart, insurance is about helping people through the unexpected. Doing what's right for our customers – especially in tough times – gives real purpose to our work.
This role is all about leading with insight. You'll be a key strategic partner in shaping Tower's financial strength and operational performance across New Zealand and the Pacific. You'll bring your actuarial expertise to the table, delivering robust reserving insights, analysing claims trends, and supporting capital optimisation – all while ensuring we meet regulatory standards.
But this isn't just about crunching numbers. It's about combining technical know-how with commercial acumen to influence decisions that drive profitability, resilience, and sustainable growth. You'll also be part of our AI transformation journey, using emerging technologies to enhance reserving methodologies and support smarter, faster decision-making.
Your day-to-day would look like:
- Leading the delivery of actuarial reserving insights and deep claims trend analysis
- Supporting capital modelling and optimisation
- Ensuring compliance with regulatory reporting standards
- Collaborating across finance, claims, reinsurance, and pricing teams
- Leveraging AI and machine learning to improve reserving efficiency and accuracy
In your first 6–12 months, success will look like:
- Maintaining and developing valuation models
- Estimating insurance liabilities and solvency positions for monthly reporting
- Delivering comprehensive liability valuations for financial and regulatory reporting
- Providing actionable insights to the wider business
- Embedding AI tools into reserving processes
To thrive in this role, you'll need:
- Nearly or newly qualified actuary (NZSA member)
- A tertiary qualification in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or similar
- General Insurance experience, with a focus on reserving or capital management
- Strong skills in Excel, SQL, R or Python
- A sharp analytical mind and a knack for solving complex problems
- Excellent communication skills – you can explain the technical in a way that makes sense
- Confidence working with diverse stakeholders and cross-functional teams
We invest in you.
We're serious about looking after our people. Along with a competitive salary, we offer a bunch of perks and benefits to support you and celebrate the work you do:
- 26 weeks of paid parental leave for the primary carer and 4 weeks for partners
- A paid day off on your birthday, plus two extra annual leave days and the option to buy up to eight more
- Wellness leave – no need to justify your mental health day
- Career growth and internal progression opportunities
- Flexible working and a beautiful, modern office in Auckland
- Discounts on Tower insurance products
- Free life insurance (up to 4x your base salary)
- Retail discounts with top brands
