Were seeking a passionate, experienced midwife to join our Clinical Coach team at Waikato Hospital - one of the largest tertiary hospitals in the Southern Hemisphere. This is a leadership opportunity to work in a supernumerary capacity, guiding midwives to grow, thrive, and deliver safe, culturally responsive care.
Youll support midwives at every stage of their journey - from new graduates to those returning to practice or stepping into advanced roles.
About the Role
As a Midwife Clinical Coach, youll provide practical clinical education and mentorship in the workplace. You will:
- Coach midwives using adult learning principles.
- Support orientation, graduate, and Return to Practice programmes.
- Develop tailored learning plans with staff and managers.
- Role model culturally safe, evidence-informed practice.
- Build relationships with tertiary providers and student midwives.
- Contribute to quality improvement and education planning.
- Maintain your own professional development and uphold Midwifery Council standards.
Key Responsibilities
- One-to-one clinical coaching in a supernumerary capacity.
- Support for new graduates, RTP midwives, and those needing skill refreshment.
- Orientation and graduate programme delivery.
- Critical thinking development and cultural safety leadership.
- Quality improvement and risk management contributions.

Waikato Hospital provides maternity care for around 4,000 births annually, with an additional 2,000 births supported across our primary birthing units and rural communities. About you
Youll be a confident, collaborative practitioner with a passion for coaching and clinical excellence. You bring:
- Registration with the Midwifery Council of New Zealand and a current practising certificate.
- Minimum five years post-registration experience.
- NZCOM preceptor or mentor training.
- Experience in adult learning and clinical coaching.
- Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Māori health equity.
- Postgraduate study completed or underway.
- Leadership domain on the Quality and Leadership Programme (QLP).
