About the Role

Were seeking a skilled and passionate midwife to join our senior midwifery leadership team. Based at Waikato Hospital - one of the largest tertiary hospitals in the Southern Hemisphere, youll play a pivotal role in shaping midwifery education across the district. This is a strategic opportunity to lead professional development, support clinical excellence, and promote culturally safe practice across a diverse maternity service. Youll work alongside midwifery leaders, clinical coaches, and the other educators in the team to grow a confident, capable workforce.

You will:

  • Design and deliver education for midwives and the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Lead the Graduate Midwife programme.
  • Coordinate student midwife clinical placements and orientation.
  • Manage the Quality Leadership Programme (QLP) across the district.
  • Act as an expert resource for postgraduate study and professional development.
  • Support quality, safety, and research initiatives.
  • Promote excellence in midwifery practice within an interdisciplinary environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and respond to education needs across hospital and community settings.
  • Facilitate evidence-based learning using adult teaching principles.
  • Liaise with tertiary providers, NZCOM, and the Midwifery Council.
  • Support innovation, case review, and performance improvement.
  • Maintain own professional development and uphold national standards.

Waikato Hospital provides maternity care for around 4,000 births annually, with an additional 2,000 births supported across our primary birthing units and rural communities. About you

Youll be a confident educator and collaborative leader with a passion for midwifery excellence. You bring:

  • Registration with the Midwifery Council of New Zealand and a current practising certificate.
  • Certificate in Adult Teaching or equivalent.
  • Minimum five years clinical experience.
  • Experience as a preceptor, mentor, or clinical coach.
  • Familiarity with Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Turanga Kaupapa, and Kaupapa Māori approaches.
  • Leadership domain on the Quality Leadership Programme (QLP) desirable.
  • Experience delivering midwifery education at ward or department level.
  • Postgraduate qualification in midwifery or a related field, or working towards.
