About the Role | Mō te Tūranga

We are seeking a reliable and customer-focused Cafe Assistant / Barista to join our established cafe within our retirement village community. Reporting to the Kitchen Manager, you'll play a key role in creating a welcoming atmosphere while delivering high-quality food, beverage and hospitality service.

You will supervise the day-to-day operations of the cafe, ensuring a pleasant and effective environment and maintaining consistent customer service for residents, visitors and staff. This role also requires strict adherence to food safety, hygiene and health & safety regulations, while working closely with the kitchen and wider village teams.

Shift:

Monday–Friday, 8:30am–4:00pm and as service requires

Duties | Mahi

  • Deliver warm, professional customer service
  • Take food and beverage orders from residents, visitors and staff
  • Prepare high-quality barista coffee using a semi-automatic machine
  • Serve and clear meals in the cafe
  • Operate the cash register
  • Maintain cafe cleanliness, including equipment and utensils
  • Bake cafe staples such as scones and muffins
  • Assist with general kitchen duties as required
  • Support a safe, clean and compliant working environment

Skills and Qualifications | Pukenga & Wheako

  • A valid food safety certificate
  • Experience in cafés or high-volume hospitality settings
  • Barista skills and confidence with semi-automatic machines
  • Strong customer-service focus and clear communication
  • Ability to follow processes and maintain high standards
  • A positive attitude and willingness to support a community environment
  • Commitment to safe work practices and Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles
