The Role
We're looking for an experienced Transport Department Manager to lead all transport and dispatch operations in our DC. This role is critical to ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant movement of goods from the Distribution Centre to stores. You'll manage a team of 25+, including Team Leaders, Administrators, and forklift drivers, and oversee everything from truck scheduling and dispatch to internal goods movement and compliance.
Your focus will be on operational excellence, safety, and continuous improvement. You'll work closely with other DC departments, retail stores, and external freight partners to optimise performance and deliver on service targets.
This is a full-time position, Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
Your Day-to-Day
- Plan upcoming volumes and create accurate labour plans
- Lead and coach the transport team, driving accountability, safety, and performance
- Oversee truck scheduling, loading, pallet staging, and internal goods movement
- Manage both internal and external transport operations, ensuring compliance and efficiency
- Collaborate with other departments to balance workloads and reallocate staff
- Ensure compliance with safety standards, SOPs, legislation, and audit requirements
- Monitor KPIs and implement continuous improvement initiatives
- Maintain accurate documentation and reporting across all transport activities
- Conduct performance conversations backed by data, document appropriately, and manage investigations
- Handle recruitment tasks: job postings in Snaphire, screening, and first interviews
- Manage compliance conversations on lateness, sickness (including RTW), KPI performance, and incident investigations
- Identify process duplication and work with the CI Manager to test changes and update SOPs
- Champion health and safety across all transport operations
What You Bring
- 7–8 years' experience in transport, dispatch, or warehouse operations, ideally in retail or FMCG
- 2–3 years' experience managing teams, including coaching and performance management
- Strong understanding of dispatch operations, inventory movement, and racking/storage systems
- Experience in resource planning, workflow management, and KPI tracking
- Proficiency in warehouse management systems and Microsoft Office Suite
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and manage a team
- Ability to manage competing priorities and make cost-conscious decisions
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Analytical and organisational skills, with the ability to work under pressure
