Black Label Barbecue is looking for a talented and driven Barbecue Sous Chef to join our award-winning barbecue crew. This is a hands-on, full-time cooking role for someone who loves fire, smoke, and flavour — and wants to be part of something special.

You'll be working under and alongside our Pitmaster (the owner), who's an award-winning force in the barbecue world, and our Head Chef, who helped build Black Label Barbecue into what it is today. They're both strong leaders with deep experience — and they're looking for someone who can bring skill, drive, and creativity to the team, while respecting the structure that keeps the BBQ Joint running like clockwork.

What You'll Do
  • Take charge of running the offset smoker in our restaurant, maintaining perfect fire management and product quality.
  • Support our Pitmaster and Head Chef across prep, cooking, and service.
  • Assist with off-site catering and festivals when required.
  • Bring your own ideas and flair — from specials to new flavours — while keeping true to our Black Label standards.
  • Work hard, have fun, and be proud of what you create.
Key Requirements
  • Proven experience cooking with largescale offset smokers — you know your way around the fire.
  • Genuine passion for barbecue and the craft of cooking low and slow.
  • Creative and confident — you can bring some personality & ego, but you've gotta have the skills to back it.
  • Team player — great attitude, reliable, and always willing to pitch in.
  • Available for weekend and evening work - we're open 7 nights a week, and as the main player on the pit, you will be working 5 days with a focus on our weekends.
  • Must be a New Zealand resident or hold a valid working visa.
