Whangarei Central, New Zealand Southern Cross Healthcare (NZ) Full time

Interim General Manager (6-month fixed term position)

Southern Cross Northland Surgical Centre

Southern Cross Northland Surgical Centre is a modern, purpose-built facility designed for the assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. The Centre is located in the heart of the Kensington medical precinct and contains consulting rooms, and a day stay operating theatre.

Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

As our General Manager, you'll be the driving force that brings the mission and vision of Southern Cross Northland Surgical Centre to life. You'll lead a high-performing team and ensure our surgical centre continues to stand out as a trusted, high-quality surgical provider in the local market. Working closely with Southern Cross Healthcare, you'll be supported by a healthcare network which puts our people, patients, and specialists experience at the heart of what we do every day.

In this pivotal role, you'll oversee the seamless delivery of safe, high-quality care, champion continuous improvement, and ensure we remain fully compliant with sector standards. You'll inspire and develop a talented team, foster a positive and collaborative culture, and build strong relationships with specialists and stakeholders. From operational performance and financial leadership to risk management and service improvement, you'll ensure the hospital runs at its best—efficient, patient-centred, and future-focused.

You'll also play a key role in shaping the future of the centre, driving business growth, identifying new opportunities, and leading strategic planning that positions the hospital for long-term success. With oversight of facilities, customer experience, and community reputation, this is a role where your leadership will have real impact—every day, on every person who walks through our doors.  This is a full-time 6-month fixed term position to ensure stable leadership and continuity during a period of organisational transition.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

  • Exceptional people leadership and strong business development capability, backed by hands-on operational management experience (ideally in the health sector)
  • Relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent experience, with the resilience and adaptability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with confidence engaging stakeholders at every level
  • Clinical background preferred but not essential—what matters is your ability to quickly understand how the business and hospital ecosystem work
  • Strong financial acumen, including P&L oversight and sound transactional decision-making
  • Ability to see the bigger picture, anticipate external changes, and identify risks early
  • Experience and insight into hospital or service-based organisations, enabling informed and strategic decision-making
  • Clear, confident judgement—able to weigh options, understand risks, and consistently deliver positive outcomes
  • A strong customer-first mindset, ensuring patient, specialist, and stakeholder expectations guide your decisions
  • Drive to maximise visibility, satisfaction, and experience across the hospital
  • Innovative thinking, with a willingness to apply fresh ideas, challenge the status quo, and take smart, considered risks
  • Natural relationship builder who creates win-win partnerships, strengthens collaboration, and resolves conflict constructively
