Downer is a leading provider of integrated services across New Zealand, with a strong presence in transport and infrastructure. Our Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) division plays a key role in keeping people moving safely and efficiently by delivering and maintaining traffic signals, lighting, and advanced transport technologies.

We're looking for a hands-on Project Engineer with an electrical background, to own the day-to-day delivery of traffic-signal maintenance and project builds across Christchurch. You'll keep intersections safe, reliable, and compliant – balancing speed, safety, and quality while developing your crew and supporting the city's essential transport network.

You'll plan and deliver work programmes, coordinate electricians and sub-contractors and ensure every job is done right the first time. You'll be part of a friendly, tight – knit Christchurch crew, backed by national Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) network for support, escalation, and knowledge sharing

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Plan and delivery of intersection builds, maintenance runs, and book traffic management 
  • Work closely with civil crews, traffic management providers, designers, and council teams to solve issues and keep communication clear.
  • Assist with pricing and variations, track costs against budgets, and protect margins with smart planning and accurate documentation.
  • Lead and mentor your team of electricians and apprentices – set daily goals, reinforce safety and workmanship standards, and run toolbox talks

To be successful in this position you will bring with you:

  • Proven experience coordinating site or engineering delivery (civil, electrical, or ITS)
  • Strong planning and sequencing skills with solid documentation discipline
  • Safety first mindset, capable of leading RAMS and toolbox talks 
  • Electrical background or familiarity with signal hardware, cabling, or controllers 
  • Exposure to commissioning, testing, and as-built documentation
