Taupo Central, New Zealand BFA Limited Full time

About Us

At He Iwi Kāinga, we're on a mission to ensure that our Tūwharetoa whānau live in homes that are healthy, safe, and nurturing. Our Kaupapa is grounded in whakapapa — the understanding that our homes are more than buildings; they are taonga that carry our stories, mana, and identity. We recognise the ongoing need for affordable, quality housing, and are committed to tailoring our support to meet the unique needs of our iwi. Our focus is not only on creating new homes, but on protecting and restoring the treasures we already have — strengthening the wellbeing of whānau, the health of our homes, and the mana of our whenua.

Through the Whare Ora Programme, we walk alongside existing Tūwharetoa homeowners to care for, maintain, and uplift their whare. Together, we are building communities where future generations will thrive — grounded in homes that foster the wellbeing of our people.

The Role

The role of Whare Ora Assessor is at the heart of our Kaupapa.  In this role you will:

  • Conduct Whare Ora home assessments to help educate whānau on what actions, repairs, or maintenance are needed in their whare.
  • Offer practical hands-on advice and guidance on home repairs, maintenance, and safety, empowering whānau with knowledge and confidence.
  • Facilitate workshops and training sessions, sharing expertise and passion for healthy, sustainable living environments.
  • Apply a Te Ao Māori lens to all assessments, ensuring whānau are engaged respectfully and with cultural competence.
  • Demonstrate understanding of Ngāti Tūwharetoa tikanga, reo, and kawa, or a willingness to learn.
  • Support the aspirations of whānau, hapū, and iwi to live well — on their whenua and in their whare.

You'll Thrive in This Role If You:

  • Love working kanohi ki te kanohi with whānau
  • Can explain technical information in plain, accessible language
  • Enjoy problem-solving and finding creative, practical solutions
  • Are confident using mobile apps, forms, and digital tools
  • Balance empathy with professionalism and accountability
  • Have a genuine passion for housing equity and community wellbeing

What We're Looking For:

Essential

  • Reliable team member with a passion for supporting Whānau, Hapū, and Iwi
  • Excellent communication skills — patient, empathetic, and culturally aware
  • Organised, proactive, and adaptable
  • Confident working independently in community settings
  • Competent with computers, mobile apps, and data entry
  • Full, clean driver's licence
  • Flexibility to travel across the Ngāti Tūwharetoa rohe (Taupō, Tūrangi, and surrounding areas)
  • Ability to safely access roof and underfloor spaces (training and PPE provided)
  • Willingness to undergo Police vetting
  • Commitment to completing and maintaining current Child Protection and Safety Training (including vulnerable persons and safeguarding practices).

Preferred

  • Building, trade, or assessor/inspector qualifications
  • Experience in housing, construction, or community engagement
  • Knowledge of Ngāti Tūwharetoa tikanga and reo Māori, or a commitment to learn
