Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role
The Lead Advisor Whānau Engagement will have a key leadership role in supporting Māori to achieve education success as Māori across the Bay of Plenty-Waiariki region. This role works closely with the Strategic Advisor Māori to operationalise Ka Hikitia Ka Hapaitia, and Whakapūmautia, Papakōwhaitia, Tau ana across our region. The Lead Advisor Whānau Engagement provides leadership across Te Mahau teams in support of ākonga Māori, and can effectively communicate in a variety of settings, including te ao Māori.
The role of the Lead Advisor will engage, facilitate, and broker support so that:

- local education services are prompted and supported to engage Māori learners and whānau and provide high quality services to them
- Māori learners and whānau are supported to engage/re-engage with local education services and access education and wellbeing support ensuring an equity lens is applied to support Māori learners and whānau
- Māori learners and whānau are aware of the range and scale of education and wellbeing services that are available to them (including skills training and employment pathways) and know how to request them
- a solution-focused practice is implemented when Māori learners and whānau are not able to access services and entitlements that they seek.

Mōhou ake | About you
To be successful in this role, you will have the following capabilities and competencies:

- advanced ability to work collaboratively with iwi/mana whenua and Māori organisations to develop local solutions
- in-depth understanding of Ka Hikitia and the implications for the education sector
- a relevant tertiary qualification or an equivalent level of practical experience in the education sector
- an awareness of, and sensitivity to, the cultural values and needs of Māori
- relevant experience with te reo Māori me ōna tikanga
- te reo Māori proficiency would be an advantage
- an understanding of the wider education sector
- proven experience in building effective stakeholder relationships and partnerships, recognising the different needs and appropriate approaches to working with different stakeholders
- the ability to contribute to the design and implementation of strategic and operational procedures
- the ability to quickly identify and mitigate risks and manage strategic linkages with internal and external initiatives
- an outcome-focused style of working
- sound project management skills and experience including procurement and contract management experience.
