**About this role | Mo tenei turanga**

**This is a permanent full time role based in New Plymouth, Taranaki**

As a **Special Education Adviser** you will:

- Provide high quality support to parents/caregivers/whanau, teachers and schools to meet the learning needs of children and young people within the NZ Curriculum Framework or Te Marautanga o Aotearoa
- Enhance inclusive practices in educational settings
- Provide professional support and guidance to schools, teachers and parents/caregivers/whanau and in collaboration, support the development and implementation of intervention plans
- Assess, analyse, hypothesise, collaboratively plan, support, and monitor the implementation of individual (or group) intervention plans for students who have additional learning needs.
- Support transition points in the child's learning pathway
- Support systemic change
- Strengthen the capability of those who are best placed to support the learning of children and young people
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with parents/caregivers/whanau and a range of professional partners, community and sector groups and support agencies
- Work effectively as part of a transdisciplinary team
- Regularly participate in and provide professional support and peer supervision as required
- Provide a service and support that is culturally responsive and protects the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi

**About you | Mohou ake**

To be successful you will:

- Be a qualified and fully registered NZ teacher. Additional qualifications in Learning Support would be an advantage.
- Have a Bachelor of Teaching or Post-graduate Diploma in Special Education / Educational Psychology.
- Demonstrable knowledge, experience, and skills in supporting children and young people with severe and challenging behaviours.
- An ability and willingness to work in collaborative partnership with other professionals, agencies, families and the sector.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including an ability to sustain productive professional relationships.
- A genuine commitment to evidence-based interventions, which demonstrate inclusive education practice and contribute to raising student achievement.
- Sensitivity to cultural and ethnic diversity and a commitment to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.
- A full current driver's licence is essential. Travel across the district is a requirement of the role.
- The ability and willingness to adhere to the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.

You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Maori and promote tikanga and Te Reo Maori. You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public sector.

Learning support is a critical part of the Te Mahau | Te Tai Whenua (Central) Group in the Ministry. We ensure that children and young people with additional learning needs are supported to achieve their full potential through education.

Our Learning Support specialists work closely with families, whanau, caregivers, schools and early childhood educators in English and Maori medium settings and other agencies to help maximise learning outcomes and promote social inclusion.
