Wellington City, New Zealand New Zealand Government Full time

The Attorney-General is seeking an exceptional legal leader to serve as Solicitor-General and Chief Executive. This dual position stands at the pinnacle of legal leadership in New Zealand, blending constitutional responsibilities with commanding executive oversight of a leading Public Service department. Its influence shapes not only policy but the very framework of government itself.

As Solicitor-General, you will act as the principal legal advisor to the Crown, providing independent and authoritative legal advice to Ministers and government agencies. You will represent the Crown in major legal proceedings, oversee the conduct of Crown prosecutions, and exercise key statutory functions on behalf of the Attorney-General. You will also play a vital role in identifying and advising on whole-of-government legal risk and ensuring the legality of executive government actions.

As the Chief Executive of the Crown Law Office, you will lead a modern, high-performing legal office, setting strategic direction and ensuring the delivery of technically excellent legal services. You will manage the Office's operations, finances, and workforce, and foster a culture of integrity, professionalism, and continuous improvement. You will also lead the Government Legal Network and contribute to system-wide legal capability and collaboration.

We are seeking an inspiring leader with a proven record of legal excellence and a passion for public service. The successful applicant will be someone who respects and is prepared to advocate for black letter law, ensuring that the Crown's legal position is grounded in established legal principles.

You will need to demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:
**Senior Legal Expertise**: Recognised authority in New Zealand's legal system, with broad experience across legal sectors and as leading counsel in court.

**Organisational Leadership**: Proven senior leadership in legal practice, with the ability to lead through transformation and prioritise effectively.

**Context Management**: Strategic awareness of constitutional and legal risk, with the ability to advise across government functions.

**Personal Leadership**: High integrity, resilience, and the ability to inspire trust and confidence.

**System Leadership**: Experience leading across the public sector, including engagement with Ministers, the judiciary, and the Crown Solicitor Network.

This role requires a current practising certificate issued by the New Zealand Law Society and the ability to obtain a Top Secret Special security clearance.

More information on the key leadership dimensions of this role can be found in the position description.
