Provide quality strategic advice to Mayor Ken
- Unique and important leadership role
- Lower Hutt based
It's an exciting time in Lower Hutt Whether it's the historic investment going into infrastructure, the depth of innovation happening across businesses, or the amazing mahi of our people and communities - there's a lot going on here.
Our community has just elected New Zealand's first Pasifika Mayor, Fauono Ken Laban. As Mayor Ken sets out on his 3 year term leading the city, we're looking for a Head of Mayor's Office to help him establish a good foundation.
This opportunity is for approximately 8 months through until 30 June 2026 to help Mayor Ken set up his Office while considering longer term support required to achieve his priorities.
**About the role**
As the Head of the Mayor's Office, you will provide high-quality strategic advice to the Mayor. Where appropriate, you will work with the CEO's Office and the Communications and Engagement team on strategies to manage issues. You will use your ability to empathise, and you will have excellent written and verbal communication skills to build meaningful relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
The Head of the Mayor's Office manages a high-performing team of three: a Senior Communications & Engagement Advisor, an Executive Assistant and an Office Coordinator. Previous experience effectively managing staff is highly desirable.
**About you**
To be successful in this role, you will have experience advising senior leaders across policy, strategy, communications and public relations. Regardless of the specific experience, you will have exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
You will be working with senior leaders in our organisation, as well as our elected members - which requires an ability to be across a range of issues, priorities, and viewpoints. A highly attuned risk radar and political nous with experience and comfort working in political environments are a must.
Finally, you will be able to draw on your ability to build relationships and your professional knowledge to deliver free and frank advice, and coach your team to do the same.
We're looking for someone who can hit the ground running in this role, so ideally you will have experience working at a Senior or Principal Advisor level (or equivalent)
We recognise rewarding you is not only about your pay, so we've outlined some of the great benefits that may be available to you as an employee of Hutt City Council. Read more about them here: careers.huttcity.govt.nz/your-total-rewards
