**About the Role - Korero mo te Turanga**

The Specialist Adviser will support growth in New Zealand's primary sector exports by identifying and prioritising high-potential market access initiatives as part of the Bilateral Relations & Trade team. You will tackle technical trade barriers, manage stakeholder relationships, and collaborate with overseas authorities to help drive export growth for primary sectors including dairy, meat, horticulture, and forestry. The primary focus of the role will be on primary sector engagement with South Asia but may involve other markets.

Balancing strategy and reactive problem-solving, you will work across areas of food safety and biosecurity, being cognisant of sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) requirements. You'll engage with industry stakeholders and overseas counterparts to resolve trade issues and realise opportunities, working closely with MFAT, MBIE, and NZTE to align messaging and leverage diplomatic ties.

Over time, this position offers scope for international travel.

**About the Team** - **Mo to matou**

The MPI Trade & International Relations Directorate's role is to maximise export opportunities for New Zealand's primary product and food sectors. We utilise our network of roles in Aotearoa and offshore to negotiate, maintain, and service the technical importing country requirements for New Zealand's $72 billion primary industry exports.

Reporting to the Manager Bilateral Relations & Trade, you will be supported by a highly experienced team.

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) partners with New Zealand's food and fibre sector to be the world's most trusted provider of high-value food and fibre products.

**Low level Security Clearance**
- most preferably a New Zealand citizen, who has **resided continuously in New Zealand**for at least the last **five (5) years**, OR
- is a citizen of, **and/or has resided continuously** in one or more of the following countries for the last **five (5) years**: either Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA); **and** has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at this level.
