Grid Asset Controller
Transpower owns and operates New Zealand's National Grid, the High Voltage transmission network connecting areas of generation with towns and cities across New Zealand.
Our people plan, build and operate the High Voltage electricity transmission system that powers our country and our lives. We're proud to have done this in one form or another for over 100 years - powering Kiwi businesses, communities, and homes.
**About the team**
The Grid Operations team plays a vital role in the safe and continuous operation of New Zealand's electricity network. Based across the National Grid Operations Centres (NGOCs) in Auckland and Christchurch, the team manages the real-time operation of grid assets, including the HVDC link under Cook Strait, while ensuring compliance with the Grid Owner's CODE obligations. Their core function is to handle planned and unplanned outages, communicate with key stakeholders, and monitor asset status via SCADA to maintain operational safety and efficiency.
**About the opportunity - commencing January 2026**
As a Grid Asset Controller, you'll be at the heart of real-time energy management, overseeing the continuous and safe operation of the national grid. Whether you're responding to unexpected events like severe weather or ensuring the smooth functioning of core grid and regional equipment, you'll thrive in a fast-paced environment where every day brings new challenges.
After completing a comprehensive one-to-two-year training programme, you'll take on key responsibilities, including:
- Managing the real-time operation of national grid assets.
- Coordinating planned and unplanned outages while maintaining compliance with grid codes and safety standards.
- Communicating effectively with senior leaders, internal teams, service providers, and external parties during critical events.
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders, including generators, distributors, and direct-connect customers.
Because electricity flows around the clock, our teams work a rotating roster that includes nights and weekends. Typically, this involves two consecutive day shifts followed by two night shifts, alternating between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm starts, with 3.5 days off in between - giving you ample time to rest and recharge.
**What sets this role apart?**
It's the impact you'll have by contributing to something meaningful - helping keep Aotearoa's electricity flowing across the motu. You'll benefit from comprehensive training and ongoing support designed to develop your skills and ensure your success. With the energy sector continually evolving, you'll also enjoy job security and opportunities for career growth.
**What we're looking for**
We need someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys working with state-of-the-art technology, and stays composed when managing the unexpected. Your ability to think quickly and communicate clearly will be key to your success.
**To be considered, your CV and cover letter will demonstrate**:
- A minimum of 2-3 years' experience in a decision-oriented, procedural driven, high-pressure environment.
- Good situational awareness with the ability to make quick decisions under pressure as part of a team.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent relationship-building and influencing abilities.
**While not essential, please tell us if you have**:
- A tertiary qualification in engineering or a relevant science field.
- Experience operating high-voltage equipment.
- Familiarity with NZ power system operations, grid management, and power system safety issues.
**Join us at Transpower**
Aotearoa is powered by the people who work here. With over 28 nationalities, our team brings diverse perspectives, knowledge, and rich experience, which they share with their colleagues across the organisation.
**Next steps**
**Existing eligibility to work in New Zealand is essential.**
**While we aim to appoint before Christmas, this role will commence January 19, 2026.
