Join a collaborative team driving critical infrastructure decisions.
- Shape investment strategies for primary asset planning.
- Contribute to sustainable energy solutions for Aotearoa.
**Lead primary asset planning at Transpower, balancing cost and risk to ensure a sustainable grid and reliable energy for New Zealand.**
At Transpower, we plan, build, operate, and maintain the National Grid - New Zealand's electricity transmission backbone. Our purpose is to empower Aotearoa's energy future, enabling a net-zero carbon economy and a secure, reliable electricity system.
**About the team**
The Asset Planning - Primary Assets team manages critical infrastructure within Transpower's High Voltage AC substation portfolio. This includes transformers, outdoor circuit breakers, disconnectors, indoor switchgear, instrument transformers, cables, structures and buswork, and LVAC.
We work alongside the Facilities and Secondary Systems asset management teams to ensure investment is directed to the right assets at the right time, balancing cost and risk, delivering the best outcomes for substations, while supporting Transpower's strategic objectives.
As the electricity sector grows to accommodate increased renewable energy generation, our focus is on sustainable, whole-of-life asset management.
**The opportunity**
Based in Wellington or Christchurch, the Senior Asset Planner plays a pivotal role in ensuring our primary asset portfolio remains robust, reliable, and fit for purpose.
- Conducting lifecycle modelling and forecasting to guide investment decisions.
- Developing asset health models to support planning and risk assessment.
- Creating business cases for asset replacement or acquisition based on cost-benefit analysis.
- Evaluating options across portfolios and teams to deliver optimal solutions through site-level planning.
- Collaborating across Transpower to ensure strategies align with long-term objectives.
This role offers a unique opportunity to combine technical expertise with strategic thinking. Working with talented colleagues, you'll help deliver sustainable solutions that ensure the safety and efficiency of New Zealand's energy infrastructure for generations to come.
**What you'll bring**
You'll bring a passion for asset management and a talent for solving complex challenges. While experience in the energy or utilities sector is ideal, we welcome applicants with relevant expertise from other industries.
Your CV and cover letter will demonstrate:
- A relevant tertiary qualification (engineering or asset management preferred).
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills, including experience with financial analysis, cost-benefit assessments, and risk management.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate technical insights into actionable advice for diverse audiences.
- A systematic approach to problem-solving and a collaborative mindset.
- The ability to mentor and support others in their professional development.
- Abstract reasoning and the ability to consider broader solution options beyond immediate problems.
While not essential, knowledge of substation primary assets and an understanding of the energy sector will be highly regarded.
