Analysts - Natural Resources and Climate Change Teams

Looking for a fresh start in the New Year? We have a fantastic opportunity to shape policy on some of the biggest issues facing the economy, the environment and the natural resources sector more generally.

Mō mātou | About Us

At Te Tai Ōhanga - The Treasury, we are committed to tiakitanga to make New Zealand a better place for people today and in the future. We safeguard New Zealand's finances and are the Government's trusted economic advisor. Our vision is to lift living standards for all New Zealanders.

Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the Roles

We are looking for analysts to help us with some of the biggest policy and financial challenges facing Aotearoa/ New Zealand. Roles are available in two teams that work closely together: Natural Resources and Climate Change.

The Natural Resources team covers policy and finance relating to the environment, conservation, primary industries, and land information.

We also work alongside the Climate Change team on key policy areas. Some interesting areas we are working on at the moment are:

- Agricultural emissions,
- Resource management reforms,
- Reform of New Zealand's waste management system,
- Review of our biosecurity system.

The Natural Resources team leads policy and funding advice across the Natural Resources agencies (Ministry for the Environment, Ministry for Primary Industries, Department of Conservation, and Land Information New Zealand). You would also be responsible for engaging with one or more of our Natural Resources agencies, including advising on significant policy proposals and agency performance. You will also be involved in cross-cutting areas, particularly areas relating to our economic and fiscal strategy.

The Climate Change team provides the central line of advice from Treasury on major climate change issues, working with a range of other teams across the Treasury and with other agencies. We also lead Treasury's engagement in major cross-government climate change work, such as the recent development of the first Emissions Reduction Plan and National Adaptation Plan. The work is wide ranging, touching on economic, fiscal and wider living standards dimensions of climate change mitigation and adaptation, and drawing on a wide range of capabilities.

**Our work involves**:

- providing advice to Ministers of Finance on major climate change issues
- working collaboratively across the Treasury to develop organisational views on key strategic issues, and provide free, frank and helpful advice
- contributing to major climate policy developments across government, bringing robust analytical thinking and a constructive and solution focused approach.

Ō pūmanawa | About You
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, influencing, and relationship management skills
- A strong background in policy or economics
- Aptitude for critical thinking and strong analytical ability
- Experience working collaboratively with others to develop agreed solutions
- Comfortable working at pace and dealing with ambiguity
- An ability to drive discussion and view issues from different perspectives
- An organised, proactive mind-set, with an orientation towards taking initiative and ownership for your work

Ko ngā hua | What we Offer
- The opportunity to influence policy at the highest levels
- An energetic and collaborative work environment in a high-performing team where you will interact with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
- A commitment to providing work and training opportunities that support your development and career aspirations

We pride ourselves on the quality of our staff and foster a working environment where excellence is recognised and where staff are encouraged to develop their own talents and potential. The Treasury values diversity amongst its employees and encourages a positive work life balance including flexible working arrangements.
