**About the opportunity**:
Our client, Caritas, is part of an international confederation of aid, development and social justice agencies whose work tackles both the causes and effects of poverty and injustice and responds swiftly to emergencies around the world. They promote advocacy and education for justice in New Zealand and overseas, and play an integral part in this worldwide network of agencies.

They are looking for an Advocacy Advisor to support the Engagement team in delivering high-quality research, analysis, and communications to advocate for justice, peace and development.

**Responsibilities will include**:
Advocacy and Research:

- Supporting the work of the Engagement team in researching and advocating for justice, peace and development.
- Preparation and production of Caritas submissions and resources
- Supporting the work of Caritas within New Zealand and internationally, and actively involving the Catholic communities in working for justice, peace and development.
- Providing a distinct Catholic perspective on issues of the day - especially those that impact poor and vulnerable communities.

Relationship Management:

- Liaising as required with Māori Catholics (including Te Runanga O Hahi Katoriki) about Tangata whenua cultural matters, to ensure advocacy work is well informed by Te Ao Māori, Māori reo, and tikanga including appropriate use of Te Reo Māori in resources.
- Contributing to furthering the relationship and advocacy objectives with Catholic communities within New Zealand, as determined in consultation with the Engagement Manager
- Liaising with relevant stakeholder groups as appropriate to ensure production of high-quality Caritas resources which engage the relevant communities.

Raising Awareness:

- Collaborating with other Catholic and ecumenical organisations to further the Mission of Caritas and of the wider Church.
- Raising awareness of how Catholic social teaching relates to signs of the times - especially on issues arising from the Caritas Strategic Outcomes.
- Ability to create and deliver compelling public presentations to advance the Caritas message.

Projects:

- Providing leadership in the preparation for and promotion of Season of Creation, Social Justice Week, Refugees, Migrants, World Day of the Poor, and Lent speaking.
- Coordinating the development of Caritas environmental and Social Justice Week resources as determined in consultation with the Engagement Manager.
- Responsive Advocacy in alignment with the Caritas strategic outcomes, resourcing, Mission or requirements of NZCBC.

**This role will suit someone with all or some following background/experience/qualities**:

- Relevant tertiary qualification such as Public Policy, Economics, Law or History.
- Understanding of and commitment to Catholic Social Teaching
- Ability to work flexibly and to tight deadlines.
- Commitment to the vision, mission and values of Caritas
- Commitment to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi
- Awareness of te reo Māori and Tikanga Māori and desire to grow in understanding of Treaty/Tiriti and te Ao Māori understanding.
- Ability to accept responsibility and to work within a team context
- Comfortable with information technology, including MS Office 365.
- Has the ability to travel as required - including domestically and internationally.
- Has a current full New Zealand Drivers Licence
- Strong writing and research skills
