Our responsibilities for retail payment regulation require a team of people with policy, finance, payments, economic and legal backgrounds. We are currently looking for a Senior Analyst who is smart, passionate and keen to learn about the retail payment system. Your strong policy and problem-solving skills will help ensure the payments industry is delivering more value for all New Zealanders.
You'll work in our Market Regulation Branch where we want to see markets working well for all New Zealand consumers. This is a permanent position, based in our Te Whanganui-a-Tara, or Tāmaki Makaurau, office with flexible working options available.
Mō te tūranga | About the role
Reporting to the Manager, Retail Payment System, you will help identify and implement ways to make the payments industry more competitive so that all New Zealanders can benefit from this increased competition. Your policy, problem-solving and communication skills will be put to the test as we look to give businesses and consumers greater confidence about ways to pay through improve transparency and encourage innovation that delivers more value to New Zealanders.
We are a relatively new team, so you have an opportunity to make your mark straight away. You will have the opportunity to work across each of our main regulatory activities: regulation and rule setting, monitoring market performance, and compliance and enforcement.
As a key member within the team, you will play a critical part to ensure that the retail payments system is competitive, efficient and capable of supporting continued innovation for the benefit of consumers, businesses and the broader economy.
You'll work collaboratively with different skillsets in our multidisciplinary team, as well as across other branches in the organisation. You'll need to be comfortable working with legal and economic regulatory concepts, be able to wrap your head around this complex system and deal with a certain level of ambiguity. You'll engage with a diverse set of stakeholders and also have direct engagement with our decision-makers, the Commissioners.

First and foremost, you have a positive attitude and thrive in a team environment. Some knowledge of the payments, banking and/or finance sectors is helpful, but not essential. You will also be someone who has:

- a curious mind, a great learning aptitude and is keen to understand how the retail payment system works, where there are issues and how to get better outcomes for consumers
- strong policy and problem-solving skills and a good understanding of the principles of economic regulation and competition
- the ability to derive insights from different information sources and bring information to life for different stakeholders
- relevant experience working with monitoring, rule-setting and/or compliance and enforcement functions
- strong verbal and written communication skills
- a relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent experience.
