Exciting opportunity to work for an exceptional Auckland not-for-profit

14-21 hours per week, until end of February 2026. Note: timing may vary in the future. Ideally, collections would happen on Tuesday and Wednesday and the third day would be agreed upon.

The Kai Community Compost Assistant will support the delivery of the Kai Whau programme and the Second Bite organics collection and composting project, as well as the maintenance of associated community gardens and compost hubs.

**Duties & Responsibilities**
- Follow direction from the Food Team Leader, Organic Teaching Garden Coordinator & Kai Community Coordinator to support opportunities for the wider community to gain experience and skills in food production and compost making.
- This is a physically demanding role. Activities include
- Driving
- Customer relations
- Collecting wheelie bins, buckets and large bags of organic resources from offsite
- Delivering resources to other sites
- Compost making
- Cleaning and washing buckets and bins
- Pruning
- Weeding
- Crop production and harvesting
- Maintaining tools
- Assisting with small construction and building tasks
- Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned as required.

**Qualifications/Competencies**

To succeed in this job the individual must be able carry out all the above duties satisfactorily and have the following:

- Be physically fit and capable of heavy lifting and handling bulky items
- Be familiar with composting techniques
- Ability to follow direction and complete tasks in a timely manner
- Ability to work cross-culturally and in ways that are appropriate for diverse communities
- Ability to multitask and prioritise workloads
- Ability to work as an individual using initiative, and as a team member
- Willingness to develop professional knowledge and skill
- Full, clean NZ Driver’s license

Computer skills
- Not required

Education and/or experience
- Interest and or willingness to learn the principles and practice of Permaculture, organic food production and composting

Language skills
- High level of English, to support ability to communicate effectively with community and other staff.

Reasoning Ability
- Ability to analyse issues and make recommendations on how to resolve them, while dealing with a variety of customer and management requests and solving practical problems

**Health and Safety**
- This position will be required to work next to bees, so must not have a bee allergy.
- Participate in Health and Safety training including First Aid as required.
