Wellington City, New Zealand Transpower Full time

New Zealand aspires to achieve a decarbonised future through electrification. Transpower plays a vital role in this transition by ensuring our infrastructure, systems, and people are prepared for a projected 68% increase in electricity demand by 2050.

**About the opportunity**

We have an exciting opportunity for an adaptable and conscientious individual to join our National Coordination Centre (NCC) in Wellington as a System Coordinator.

You'll work on a flexible, best-practice roster that **includes nights and weekends** as part of our professional and collaborative NCC whānau. Together, we operate and manage New Zealand's power system and wholesale electricity market in real-time.

Your primary responsibility will be to safely and reliably balance the power system by managing the flow of electricity from power stations to meet consumer demand. You'll also contribute to operational projects and initiatives that enhance how we operate, ensuring we're ready for a dynamic and exciting future in the energy sector.

While the learning curve is steep, you'll be fully supported by our technical training team and experienced coaches as you progress through our comprehensive training programme to become a qualified and competent System Coordinator.

**About you**

You're detail-oriented, embrace challenges, and take pride in delivering high-quality work. You think creatively, follow processes carefully, and communicate clearly and effectively. Under pressure, you remain composed and provide thoughtful solutions to time-critical situations.

You enjoy working collaboratively within a focused and supportive team, and your natural curiosity and appetite for knowledge enable you to learn new processes and technical skills quickly.

Our NCC team love their work because they:

- Operate in a truly supportive environment with cutting-edge training and technology.
- Take pride in providing an essential service to New Zealanders.
- Feel continually challenged and rewarded.
- Enjoy the lifestyle benefits that come with shift work.

Once fully competent, you will:

- Deliver real-time operation of the power system, adhering to NCC processes and requirements.
- Respond calmly and efficiently to real-time incidents.
- Support the Operations Division in delivering services to the industry.
- Ensure Transpower's obligations for power system and market operations are consistently met.

**What you'll bring**

To succeed in this role, you'll need:

- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with a calm, mature approach.
- Strong problem-solving skills to address mission-critical issues under tight timeframes.
- Mental agility to make decisions and deliver high-quality work in a fast-paced, process-driven environment.
- High computer literacy and an aptitude for learning specialised software.
- A collaborative mindset and the ability to build strong team dynamics.

Additionally, it would be advantageous if you have:

- Experience in a similar operational or regulated systems environment.
- Industry knowledge in power systems, engineering, or science.
- An understanding of electricity market operations and power system management.
- A tertiary qualification in science, mathematics, or engineering (preferred but not essential).

**What sets this role apart?**

This is one of the few roles in Aotearoa where your actions have immediate, nationwide impact. As a System Coordinator, you'll be trusted to make decisions that help keep the lights on, support the energy transition, and maintain the integrity of our national grid. You'll develop specialist skills through structured training, work within a close-knit and supportive team, and enjoy the lifestyle that shift work provides. It's meaningful work with real challenge and room to grow.

**Join us at Transpower**

Aotearoa is powered by the people who work here. Every home, every marae, every electric vehicle, every hospital relies on the electricity we manage and deliver. This is your opportunity to join us on a mission that affects all New Zealanders, every day, and long into the future.

With over 28 nationalities, our people provide diverse perspectives, knowledge, and rich experience which they love to share.

**Next steps**

**This role closes on Sunday 3 August**. However, you may be contacted before the closing date to assist with shortlisting.

**Existing eligibility to work in New Zealand is essential.
