He angitūtanga | About the role
Join our team to support the highest form of marine protection in Aotearoa, producing spectacular opportunities for marine life to thrive in the absence of exploitation and development.
As Ranger, Marine Reserves you will be responsible for the implementation of the Marine Reserves Compliance Plan and the Marine Reserve Monitoring Framework in the Kāpiti Wellington District. You will have defined leadership responsibilities, including the ability to plan and authorise technical work programmes in our marine reserves.
Be an advocate for marine reserves, working in true partnership with local iwi, hapū and whānau to ensure our Treaty Partners are engaged with and informed about marine reserve health. You will have a clear understanding of the biodiversity aspirations of our Mana Whenua Partners.
**The position focusses on**:

- leading and coordinating marine reserve compliance; responding to and investigating suspected breaches of the Marine Reserves Act 1971.
- building and maintaining strong internal and external networks; fostering practical compliance and monitoring partnerships with local iwi, hapū and whānau, managing relationships with community groups, work collaboratively with interagency compliance and planning, working closely with a network of Marine Rangers, Technical Advisor Marine, Programme Lead Marine Reserves and wider Teams.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
This appointment requires an individual with excellent interpersonal skills and a natural ability to form enduring relationships. You will be comfortable working in partnership with a broad range of internal staff, including the National Compliance and Marine Ecosystem Teams, and external stakeholders. You will develop a sound understanding of Treaty relationships and Treaty Settlement obligations. Successful implementation of your work programme will depend upon your ability to establish and sustain strong relationships with external and internal stakeholders.
- Experience leading, planning, implementing and completing reporting on operational projects, well-versed in data management;
- Previous experience working in an enforcement and/or marine monitoring environment;
- Strong interpersonal skills, being comfortable working with a wide range of stakeholders;
- Extensive experience operating or working on vessels offshore, comfortable working a full working day at sea (training towards a Skipper's licence can be provided);
- Basic understanding of marine ecology and commercial and/or recreational fishing practices;
- Understand the importance and responsibilities of Māori Crown relationships is essential, and experience of working with tangata whenua is highly desirable,;
- A tertiary qualification in biological science, preferably marine science, or relevant industry experience;
- Full New Zealand driver licence.

**Desirable**:

- Skipper Restricted Limits (SRL) qualification
- A Scientific certificate of competency (COC) or dive master
- Please note: This position requires the ability to work outside of normal hours (including weekends and holidays), and travel as required. You will also be required to pass a security check.

The Kapiti Wellington District Team is responsible for delivering conservation work on the ground through our biodiversity, recreation/historic, community engagement, and iwi partners between Ōtaki, Upper Hutt and the Wellington south coast.
