Te tūnga | The role
We have a full-time 12 month fixed term opportunity for a Technician to join our Covid 19 Surveillance Team, based at our Kenepuru Science Centre in Porirua. Here you will build and grow your knowledge and expertise in a supportive team environment.
In this role, you will be responsible for undertaking a range of tasks in accordance with the SARS-CoV-2 whole-genome sequencing processes at ESR. These include:

- General laboratory duties including housekeeping, maintenance, quality assurance, health and safety activities.
- Data entry, including receipting samples into LIMS systems and working with multiple databases.
- Laboratory work - including handling infectious materials, manual and automated nucleic acid extractions, sample QC, and sequencing library preparation and processing.

To be successful in this role, you may have a mix of the following:

- A relevant tertiary qualification in Biological Sciences, Molecular Biology or a similar scientific field.
- Registration or eligibility for registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand (MSC), ideally as a medical laboratory technician.
- Experience in and knowledge of molecular biology within a laboratory environment.
- Competency in the analysis, interpretation, and reporting of technical data.
- Knowledge of PC2 laboratory safety practices, biological and chemical hazards.
- Competency in the use of computers, including databases.
- Initiative, flexibility, and a willingness to support the wider team.
- A methodical approach to work, with the ability to prioritise tasks effectively, and able to meet deadlines to provide excellent service.
