**Āu Mahi | What You Will Do**
As a Studio Technician, you will be responsible for managing and maintaining the Digital Screen's specialised Sound, Editing, and Production studios. You will provide technical support to staff and students, oversee Production Asset Management and digital workflows, and liaise with industry professionals in film, game development, and music. Additionally, you will contribute to teaching digital screen arts, maintain equipment and facilities, provide training and mentorship, and coordinate with external vendors for support.
As the Studio Technician in Sound, you will support the delivery of audio-related teaching and practice within Digital Screen by managing and maintaining sound-specific facilities and equipment. This includes production and post-production spaces, field recording kits, Foley stages, and audio software systems.
You will work closely with academic staff to prepare and support sound-based sessions, assist students with practical work, and maintain a high standard of technical reliability across all audio workflows. Your responsibilities will include:
- Overseeing the operation, setup, and maintenance of recording equipment, microphones, audio interfaces, monitors, and related hardware.
- Supporting field and studio-based sound capture, including Foley, ADR, and dialogue recording sessions.
- Managing Pro Tools systems and session templates, ensuring software/hardware integrations are functional and consistent across studios.
- Assisting students and staff with troubleshooting and technical queries related to sound capture, post-production, and workflow logistics.
- Managing booking systems and ensuring equipment is prepped, functional, and logged accurately.
- Contributing to health and safety procedures around audio practices
- Liaising with academic staff to ensure technical aspects of course delivery align with professional standards.
- Training students in the use of recording gear, sound software, and correct studio practice through informal support and guided demonstrations.
- Collaborating with the broader Digital Screen technical team and vendors to maintain and improve studio operations.
**Mōu | Who You Are**
- High-level expertise in sound recording technologies, with a strong understanding of digital workflows.
- Hands-on experience with studio and/or location sound workflows, including boom and lavalier mic operation, dual-system recording, and sound capture for picture
- Strong IT system management skills, especially post-production networking and file management(advantageous).
- Basic soldering skills are preferred
- Basic electrical competency and understanding of audio connectivity and signal flow
- Proficiency in Pro Tools, including I/O routing, session management, basic troubleshooting, and understanding of sync workflows
- Experience with collaborative Pro Tools workflows, including shared project management on Avid networked storage systems (Nexus) and remote session operation via Avid Cloud Collaboration or similar platforms (preferred)
- Familiarity with post-production sound practices, including Foley, voice capture, metadata tagging, and sound library organisation (preferred)
- Working knowledge of professional audio hardware, such as recorders, radio mics, field mixers and IFB monitoring systems
- Experience in game audio would be an advantage e.g. the Unity and/or Unreal audio systems, audio middleware such as Wwise)
- Experience supporting students or junior practitioners in sound-focused environments (desirable).
- A Bachelor's degree (NZQA Level 7) or equivalent qualification.
