New role
- Supportive and dynamic team
- Wellington based
The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet's (DPMC's) purpose is to advance an ambitious, resilient and well-governed New Zealand.
The Legal Services Team provides legal advice and support to the department, and the National Emergency Management Agency ('NEMA' - a departmental agency hosted by DPMC), on a wide range of corporate, policy and operational matters relating to national security, emergency management, child wellbeing and poverty reduction and much much more.
Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role
This is an exciting and fast-paced role within a strong professional team. The work we do makes a difference to the lives of New Zealanders.
**Principal Solicitors provide advice on**:
- policy and machinery of government, legislative drafting, litigation and inquiries, and related matters for the department's business units and NEMA. This includes advice during the response to and recovery from emergency events and other crises. Advising at times of emergency events and other crises may require flexible working and additional hours to meet the requirements and demand of the response;
- a range of issues facing the department and NEMA, including assisting with contracts and procurement, statutory interpretation, official information and privacy matters, health and safety advice, and various other matters that may arise.
Principal Solicitors demonstrate expertise as a leader and work closely with, and in support of, other members of the Legal Services team to ensure legal advice provided to DPMC and NEMA is robust, fit for purpose, and mitigates risks for the department and government.
This Principal Solicitor role plays a critical role advising on complex strategic and operational legal matters, as well as leading on some key emergency management projects for the Legal Services Team. It would suit someone who has experience, or an interest in, emergency management.
As well as coaching and mentoring within the Legal Services team, the role enables the opportunity to work closely with our Executive Leadership Teams and Chief Executives at DPMC and NEMA - a great opportunity for a person wanting to take the next step in their career.
