At the heart of the electricity sector, Transpower proactively plans for the grid of the future that will connect new renewable energy projects and enable a transition to a net zero carbon economy. Enquiries to connect to the Grid from generators, distributors, and end-users have doubled in the past three years and these projects are cheaper and faster to build than ever before. Transpower are working to ensure we can respond by offering connections faster and more efficiently.

**About the team**

Our Grid Development division identifies the future needs for the grid over the next 20 to 30 years, including changing electricity demand, changing generation, and replacement or repair of major assets.

In our Tactical Engineering Group, the Design and Project Engineering - Substations team is responsible for providing engineering advice and solutions that optimise performance, risk, and cost for New Zealand energy users. Our team provides design and engineering expertise to all Transpower substations projects through research, optioneering, design, and delivery.

The team is currently working on five new customer funded substations and another five are in the planning and preparation stages. Additionally, there are another 80 projects in progress covering everything from Transformer replacements, Indoor Switchboard installations, Reactor installations, and a range of other upgrade and replacement works.

**About the Opportunity**

Based in Wellington, Auckland, Hamilton, or Christchurch, this role is a key influencer and interesting hybrid of design, economics, engineering, and problem solving. You'll play an essential part in the decision-making process regarding what and how work is carried out on the national grid.

As a Senior Engineer you'll lead the engineering, technical thinking, and design for all types of substations projects. Working alongside your colleagues in Project Delivery, you'll investigate options and develop feasible solutions that enable faster grid connections, greater customer centricity, and deliver better value for our customers and New Zealanders.

Acting as coach and mentor, you'll help to build technical capability within the team and provide engineering expertise and engineering leadership to the wider business. You will be working with a team of experienced and collaborative transmission engineers and project managers, and you will gain knowledge and experience of building a national electricity transmission system that you can only get at Transpower.

**What you'll be doing**

You'll play a key role in the optioneering and development of solutions for new substation projects and brownfield upgrade projects. You'll collaborate with internal and external customers building and managing relationships across Transpower, with our design consultants, and service providers.

**Typical projects include**:

- Greenfield development of substations
- Customer generation and feeder connections
- Power transformer replacements/additions
- HV Switchgear Replacements
- Transmission line undergrounding (HV cables)
- HV bus rationalisation and replacements
- Primary equipment replacements (e.g. CBs, DCBs, etc)

**What will you bring**

You'll be a degree qualified Electrical Engineer with CPEng or an international equivalent.

**Your CV and cover letter will clearly demonstrate**
- A minimum of 8 years specialist project engineering experience with generation, transmission, or distribution substations.
- You have project development and delivery experience leading engineering aspects of substations projects through all stages of the project lifecycle.
- A proven track-record of establishing and maintaining positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders. You will be experienced in providing expert advice and representing Transpower's needs to the organisation, executive leadership and external parties.
- Excellent communication and influencing skills, to clearly communicate technical or complex issues to a wide range of stakeholders and audiences.
