Mō te tūnga | About the role
The purpose of Te Tari Pūreke, Firearms Safety Authority business unit is to enable New Zealand to be a world leader in arms safety through an effective regulatory and administrative approach to the Arms Act and Arms Regulations. Established to lead, operate, and develop investment in modernisation of the firearms system, which will result in a more efficient and effective risk-based licensing system, and shall improve public confidence in the firearms licensing system. The modernisation of the Arms Regulatory System will take every opportunity to prevent harm through transparent, high quality, consistent, legislatively correct, and effective regulatory activities. This will also cover world leading administration, education, and promotion of compliance within the provisions of the Arms Act and Arms Regulations.
As an Arms Officer - Registry, you will play a vital role improving public safety by stopping firearms falling into the wrong hands and by supporting the reduction of risk of anyone becoming a victim of a firearms crime. The overarching remit of an Arms Officer - Registry will be to review completed files to determine if an applicant should be issued a firearms license, which will also see you involved in the process of declining applicants who are deemed not fit to receive a license. As such, we are looking for strong communicators, with solid written and oral skills who take a pride in the quality of work they deliver and are able demonstrate their accountability as individuals into a team’s greater purpose.
We are looking to attract individuals with a skill set which enables purposeful interaction with the vast public demographic and with the firearms community. Based in Rugby House, Wellington. The position is a mix of digital and non - digital responsibilities, for which a strong customer service ethic will be prerequisite. Importantly we are looking to attract individuals with a wide range of backgrounds, life skills and levels of experience. A core value of Police is Valuing Diversity. **Takohanga Matua | Key Accountabilities**:
- Where an applicant is not found to be ’fit and proper. to prepare the intention to refuse file for review by the Arms Service Supervisor (before final decision by a commissioned officer)
- Make and receive calls in relation to; the Arms Act and Arms Regulations, dealing with members of the firearms community, public and with internal customers.
- Validate and enter modifications, prohibitions and cancellations in the firearms system
- Ensure all firearms records are correctly maintained and updated as required (sales or transfer, destruction or other disposal).
- Arrange for the revocation of firearms or dealer licences due to the issue of a Protection Order if required
**Requirements**:
- Applicants need to be New Zealand Permanent Residents
**Pre-Employment Checks**:
- A standard Police vetting check is required
**Skills**:
- Critical thinking and sound judgement
- Ability to plan, prioritise and organise work for self/others
- Good communication skills; written and oral
- A Customer service orientation
- Cultural awareness and sensitivity
- Basic computer (MS Office) skills
As an Arms Officer, Registry, you will work Monday - Friday and will be required you to have a flexibility of start and finish times as volumes of work against time are yet to be fully determined.
We will ask you questions based on “How we will deliver Our Business - Core Competencies” and the appropriate role level.
