Discover a career with purpose at MBIE
Discover a career with purpose at MBIE
- Join the high performing team to lead development of policy and strategy projects
- Salary range $103,290- $132,417, kiwisaver & wellness benefit
- Wellington central (applicants outside Wellington can also apply) Tēnei tūranga - About the role:
We are looking for a Senior Policy Advisor to join the Employment Standards Policy Team in MBIE’s Workplace Relations and Safety Policy branch. Our team advises the Minister for Workplace Relations and Safety on New Zealand’s statutory minimum code of employment protections, and the broader regulatory system that makes those rights work in practice. Our advice is informed by working with unions, employers and other stakeholders across government and society.
Any regulations that aim to enhance workers’ rights and bargaining power can also impose costs on employers and constrain the freedoms of regulated parties. As such, our work is often at the centre of debate about the complex relationships between regulation, productivity, and wellbeing.
Our work programme includes advising on changes to the minimum wage, paid parental leave, and the Holidays Act, and on better protections for contractors. This includes thinking about how the gig economy interacts with employment law.
The other teams in the Workplace Relations and Safety branch work on policy projects relating to employment relations, international labour, health and safety, and accident compensation. We work in a collaborative environment to deliver the government’s priorities - with the wide variety of work across the branch there are often development opportunities to work with other teams on projects that will help you grow and build your experience and work towards your career goals.
**What we offer**:
Our work is interesting, high-priority and can result in big impacts for everyday New Zealanders. Our projects often involve regulatory change so you will get the opportunity to be involved in government and parliamentary processes, and in policies which will make a difference in the lives of people at work.
We have a flat structure where you will be talking directly to Ministers and stakeholders about your work. Our team works closely with our operational counterparts, so you’ll get good experience at making sure our policies are well implemented.
MBIE supports a wide range of flexible working arrangements. Some of our best people are part-time or work flexibly, and we are really open to those options. Talk to us about what might work for both you and us.
Ngā pukenga me ngā wheako e hiahiatia ana - Skills and experience required:
We are looking for motivated people with experience in problem solving complex problems and formulating high-quality policy advice for a range of stakeholders and projects.
They have great knowledge of legislative frameworks and processes, Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles, and a strong understanding of the wider political environment to better position New Zealand for the future.
**Ideally you will**:
- have experience leading complex policy projects within central government
- understand Te Tiriti o Waitangi and have applied it in public policy and in partnership with Māori
- have wide ranging knowledge of policy development disciplines and processes
- build strong stakeholder relationships, using influencing and engagement skills to gain the cooperation and commitment of others
- have demonstrated capability in working with Ministers, senior public service officials, internal and external stakeholders
- have a passion for leading and coaching others to develop their policy craft and take their careers to the next level
- be able to work through ambiguity and deliver results
**Ētahi kōrero mō MBIE - About MBIE**:
MBIE's goal is to create a resilient and high-performing economy that delivers real and ongoing quality of life for all New Zealanders.
We do this by working with others to create an environment that supports businesses to be more productive and internationally competitive, enables all New Zealanders to participate in the economy through improved job opportunities and by working to ensure quality housing is more affordable.
People are at the heart of our mahi, our way of working is guided by our values which shape our behaviours.
- Mahi Tahi - Better Together
- Māia - Bold and brave
- Pae Kahurangi - Build our Future
- Pono Me Te Tika - Own It
Our aspirations are echoed in our Māori identity - Hīkina Whakatutuki - which broadly means ‘lifting to make successful'.
MBIE recognises the partnership founded under Te Tiriti o Waitangi between Māori and the Crown and is committed to giving effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi. We will do this through enduring, meaningful and effective partnerships with iwi, Māori, other Māori groups/organisations and the Crown, as this is critical to enable economic and social development, both for Māori and for wider Aotearoa New Z
