Senior Legal Counsel

The Wellington City Council (WCC) legal team are making some changes - for the better

WCC is looking for 5 Legal and Senior Legal Counsels to work across the Public Law, Property, Construction, Commercial and RMA specialities - you can choose
**About you**
As the Senior Legal Counsel, you will:

- have at least 5 years PQE, ideally including some in-house, public sector legal experience
- have advanced statutory interpretations skills
- demonstrated ability to provide legal advice in a practical and understandable manner
- understand the regulatory frameworks in which Council operates
- be able to provide strategic, solutions focused legal advice
- thrive in uncertain and complex environments

**The work**
The two legal teams at WCC do amazing, challenging, and varied work for our city.
The regulatory team supports safe decision making, transport projects, water issues/ reform, parking issues, resource management, waste and health issues. They support policy and by-law development and help run litigation involving Council.
The commercial team supports all aspects of council’s commercial and property functions, working on projects that changes the face of the city’s landscape and aims to improve the wellbeing of the city’s residents. This includes development agreements, leasing and licensing (Property Law), large scale construction projects, commercial (Construction Law)), commercial issues such as the establishment of the Community Housing Provider for social housing, and contracts for services to ensure the smooth running of the city (commercial).
Both teams provide also legal guidance for large scale and complex projects such as Te Matapihi library, Lets Get Welly Moving, Sludge Minimisation, Zero Waste project, social housing affordability project and upgrades, Water Reform and many more.
**The opportunity**
This is a great opportunity for senior solicitors to bring their existing 5 + years’ experience and utilise this complex and varied environment to be encouraged and supported to further consolidate and deepen in a commercial, constructions public law, property or RMA speciality.
