Auckland CBD, New Zealand Williams Legal Recruitment Limited Full time
  • Broad in-house role with data/digital/privacy focus
  • 12-month fixed term contract (commencing circa mid Feb 2026)
  • Auckland based with flexible/hybrid working

If you're ready to start 2026 with a fresh challenge, here is a great opportunity to join a talented, highly engaged legal team and contribute to a dynamic organisation at the forefront of New Zealand's real estate sector.

About the organisation

The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand ("REINZ") is the membership organisation for New Zealand's real estate and property management sectors and provides products and services to approximately 17,000 real estate professionals throughout the country.  With a proud history of over 100 years, REINZ promotes professional excellence within the real estate sector, enabling its members to deliver high quality real estate services to New Zealanders.  REINZ has a high-quality education offering, and provides innovative digital and data products and services to members. REINZ also plays an important Advocacy role as the voice of the real estate profession.

About the role

Reporting to the General Counsel, you'll be an integral member of a small, busy and dedicated legal team, providing high quality support to REINZ, ensuring a seamless operation.  This is a 12-month contract role to cover a team member's parental leave and a key aspect of the role involves working closely with the Chief Digital Innovation Officer and the Data & Digital team.  This will involve drafting, reviewing and supporting the team to negotiate complex and varied contacts while also providing high quality advice on a broad range of matters in the digital & data space. You'll also serve as REINZ's Privacy Officer and privacy lead, providing expert guidance and supporting the smooth operation of this critical function.  You'll work with autonomy across these areas backed by the support of the General Counsel and external lawyers when required.

Beyond these core responsibilities, there's scope to contribute right across the organisation — from supporting governance projects and AGM processes, to supporting with strategic initiatives, Advocacy and stakeholder engagement, including working closely with member focus groups for different sectors within the real estate profession.

This is a full-time position, with flexible hybrid working arrangements — typically three days onsite and two days WFH.

What we are ideally looking for

  • Qualified lawyer with NZ practising certificate (or eligibility to hold one)
  • Minimum 6 years PQE in commercial law with experience in data & digital/tech contracts
  • Sound understanding of privacy laws and compliance frameworks
  • Excellent judgement and the ability to assess and balance legal risk pragmatically
  • Great communication skills and the ability to build strong relationships at all levels in a credible and sincere manner
  • The ability to manage competing priorities and work autonomously
  • A proactive, positive and collaborative "can do" style

Whether you're curious to explore working in-house or already thriving in an in-house legal role, this is a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable experience in a high-performing legal team that values collaboration, mutual support, and genuine camaraderie. You'll enjoy working alongside talented and supportive colleagues and making a valuable contribution to an organisation that plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of real estate in Aotearoa.
