**He angitūtanga: The opportunity**
Every now and then a unique communications role comes up that has it all - an interesting work programme; the opportunity to use your wide range of communications skills; creation of both long-term communications strategy and delivery of daily plans; and the chance to make a difference to the everyday lives of Aucklanders. This is one of those roles
Auckland Emergency Management (AEM) department has an opportunity for a permanent full-time Principal Communications Advisor to join our passionate and dedicated team. This role is based in the city centre and will be vital during an emergency response.
You’ll work alongside the Principal Strategy & Implementation Advisor to shape and deliver a communications programme that helps Aucklanders understand how to plan for, prepare, and respond to emergencies.
You’ll also be part of the response team that stands up to support and inform Aucklanders when disaster strikes.
This role also supports the department’s leadership team by providing high-level communications advice on a wide range of topics, from political engagement to reputational and media issues. You’ll work alongside Auckland Council’s Communications and Marketing department to ensure consistency of messaging and a strong public profile for AEM’s work across Tāmaki Makaurau.
You can expect to:
- Develop and lead the delivery of AEM’s Public Information and Awareness work programme—spanning readiness, response, recovery, and risk reduction.
- Identify and prepare for media risks and opportunities in collaboration with the council’s Corporate Communications and Media team.
- Lead and maintain regular engagement with the regional emergency communications network, including Public Information Managers, Lifeline Utility communicators, and other key stakeholders.
**He kōrero mōu: About you**
You’ll bring a calm, strategic approach to complex and high-pressure situations, with the ability to distil complex and sensitive information into clear, concise communications for a wide range of audiences—including media, stakeholders and elected members.
A confident relationship builder, you’ll have the interpersonal skills and political acumen needed to engage at a senior level of the organisation. Your resilience, sound judgment, and strong self-awareness mean you remain composed and credible even under pressure.
You’ll also be known for your collaborative mindset and commitment to delivering high-quality outcomes. With a track record of working across teams to influence and drive results, you’re someone others trust to deliver with professionalism and integrity.
We are specifically looking for:
- Technical knowledge across all aspects of communications, including problem-solving, crisis communications, reputation and risk management.
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in the public sector or large, complex organisations with strategic communications, public information, public affairs or related discipline.
- Preparedness and ability to work to a roster outside of standard business hours and to lead and participate in an emergency response.
**Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou: What we offer**
Auckland Council is the largest local government council across Oceania, serving over 1.7 million people and contributing towards making Tāmaki Makaurau a world-class city.
We offer a range of employee benefits and proudly support flexible working options where possible.
Help us make a difference to Tāmaki Makaurau.
