Our purpose | To tatou kaupapa

Our kaupapa is about making the right decisions based on evidence, mātauranga, and science. At the EPA, we encourage big ideas and bold goals.
What we achieve today helps shape the future of New Zealand for generations to come.

About our group | Mō te roopu
Compliance, monitoring and enforcement is an integral part of the EPA’s work to protect the environment and the health outcomes of New Zealanders. Activities undertaken by the CME Group sit alongside decision-making and engagement and are fundamental to the overall strategic direction of the EPA.
The Compliance, Monitoring and Enforcement Group helps everyone - from small businesses to big organisations - understand and comply with environmental regulations to help protect communities, the environment and people. Our role is to ensure that regulated parties understand what their obligations are and are held to account if they don’t comply.
We do this through educating, engaging, monitoring and investigating, and taking enforcement action when necessary. This approach benefits the environment, the economy and communities, and means we can focus our resources (including our enforcement powers) on tackling the most important environmental issues.
Our multi-disciplinary team of compliance, monitoring and enforcement officers work together, supporting each other to carry out this essential role in maintaining and upholding New Zealand’s environmental regulatory regime for the good of all of Aotearoa today, and for future generations.
About the role | Mō te tūnga
The purpose of the Team Leader, Compliance, Monitoring and Enforcement (TL CME) is to lead and manage a team of senior compliance officers, compliance officers, assistant advisors and administrative support, undertaking compliance monitoring, inspection and investigation activities to ensure the delivery of multi-disciplinary compliance, monitoring and enforcement (CME) functions across a wide range of environmental legislation.
The TL CME has full technical responsibility for the work undertaken and completed by the team across all environmental legislation that the EPA regulates.
The TL CME is responsible for the day-to-day management of staff, including coaching, mentoring, managing workflows, assignment of tasks and recommending enforcement outcomes within strict statutory timeframes. The TL CME also manages proactive compliance projects, investigation of non-compliance and team and individual performance, to deliver optimal compliance outcomes whilst providing constructive feedback and support to team members.
Leadership and personal effectiveness are key for success in this role. The TL CME takes individual responsibility for seeking internal or external learning opportunities to enhance expertise and/or further career growth.
The TL CME shares responsibility for the workflow and delivery of the CME Work Programme with the other TL(s) CME and is pro-active in approach, working cooperatively and consistently resulting in equity of tasks and opportunities across teams.
We are also open to external secondment (12 months +) for those Team Leaders looking to develop their skills in another Government agency.
