The Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai (DOC) serves to protect and sustain nature across Aotearoa. We put nature and people at the heart of our mahi, guided by te reo Māori, te ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. We do this by:

He angitūtanga | About the role
**The position will be focussed on**:
- the identification, analysis and prioritisation of biodiversity system improvements
- development and delivery of communication materials to support system improvement initiatives
- oversight and leadership of DOC's Species Recovery Framework.
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
You will provide strategic advice, as required, including systems analysis but also input into conservation law reform, specific species advice, or other advice depending on your experience and skills. You must also be a proven effective communicator with excellent writing and verbal skills and experience, able to interpret complex (often scientific) information, cut through jargon and create plain English materials for a range of internal audiences. Willingness to listen and learn from highly skilled team members from across the biodiversity domains

If this sounds like you and you have the following attributes, I'd love to hear from you:
- A strong systems thinker with ability to lead and work across the business to develop sound rationale and process to improving biodiversity systems.
- A very strong team player with ability to build and sustain productive relationships across DOC and with external stakeholders.
- Excellent communicator, confident in engaging at all levels in the Department, and tailoring written and verbal communication tools to a range of audiences.
- Proven ability to bring teams together and drive towards planned outputs.
- Ability and agility to plan, organise, and reprioritise work to meet timeframes.
- Knowledge of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.
- A relevant post graduate degree in ecology or biological sciences highly desirable but not essential, depending on experience and expertise.
- Current New Zealand driver licence.
This position is office-based with the opportunity for occasional field work. Travel will be required within New Zealand from time-to-time.
Mō te tīma | About the team
This is a new team, comprising highly experienced people delivering biodiversity advice, with a focus on biodiversity systems improvement. The team sits in the Terrestrial Biodiversity Directorate, but with a scope stretching across the biodiversity domains
- terrestrial, threats, marine, and freshwater.
The team is charged with identifying and facilitating biodiversity systems improvement areas, including the species system (from threat classification to management), the Species Recovery Group Framework, and with leading engagement with Operations to identify biodiversity priorities and provide integrated biodiversity advice in line with the Aotearoa New Zealand Biodiversity Strategy / Te Mana o te Taiao.

The salary range for this position is $89,757 to $113,578 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory - this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment.
