We are seeking a skilled General Manager to lead our team in delivering strategic plans and activities that support the priorities of Whakatāne District Council.

About the Role

This exciting opportunity is dedicated to driving the Council's customer and community value initiatives by delivering exceptional, customer-focused experiences. The role involves overseeing open spaces, aquatic and recreation centres, libraries, the exhibition centre, as well as the museum and research facilities.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of planning and delivering successfully in a multi-channel, multi-site customer-facing environment. They will also have a strong understanding of the political, economic and regulatory environment applicable to New Zealand local authorities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborating with the executive team to shape and implement strategies for the development and delivery of the Long-Term Plan (LTP) and Annual Plan.
  • Driving the creation and execution of innovative, realistic, and measurable strategies specific to the portfolio.
  • Leading the design and implementation of the Council's community experience commitment, ensuring consistently high-quality interactions across all portfolio services.
  • Fostering and maintaining strong strategic relationships with external stakeholders, including iwi, hapū, community groups, service providers, contractors, and government agencies.

The ideal candidate will be a natural leader with 10 years+ leadership experience in a large Local or Central Government organisation. They will also have a University degree qualification in a relevant field such as business or management.

About You

You will receive access to a range of staff benefits, including five weeks' annual leave and flexible working arrangements. The role also offers a competitive salary, estimated at around $180,000 per annum, depending on experience. You will also be based in a beautiful location with easy access to rivers, lakes, forests, beaches, and great walks.
