The Whakatāne District Council is dedicated to providing an exceptional customer and community value experience. As a General Manager, you will play a key role in driving this initiative by delivering high-quality experiences that promote community health, wellbeing, and social engagement.
Your responsibilities will include overseeing open spaces, aquatic and recreation centres, libraries, the exhibition centre, as well as the museum and research facilities. You will lead strategic planning and foster partnerships to maximize the impact of these facilities and other opportunities as hubs for community wellbeing and enjoyment.
Some of your key tasks will include collaborating with executive team members to shape and implement strategies for the development and delivery of the Long-Term Plan (LTP) and Annual Plan. You will drive the creation and execution of innovative, realistic, and measurable strategies specific to your portfolio.
You will lead the design and implementation of the Council's community experience commitment, ensuring consistently high-quality interactions across all portfolio services. Additionally, you will track and analyze portfolio performance metrics, such as resident satisfaction surveys, and adjust strategies to address changing needs and challenges.
To be successful in this role, you will need to have a University degree qualification in a relevant field such as business or management, along with 10+ years of leadership experience in a large Local or Central Government organization. You will also require proven experience of planning and delivering successfully in a multi-channel, multi-site customer-facing environment.
Familiarity with the political, economic and regulatory environment applicable to New Zealand local authorities, including Te Tiriti o Waitangi – the Treaty of Waitangi, is essential. The role requires strong strategic relationships with external stakeholders, including iwi, hapū, community groups, service providers, contractors, and government agencies.
The Whakatāne District Council offers a range of staff benefits, including five weeks' annual leave and flexible working arrangements. Our values are centered around being always learning and improving, being passionate and proud, working as one team, putting people at the heart of everything we do, and caring about our environment.
