About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Māori Design Leader to join our Urban Design Unit, leading the development of the Māori Design Kaupapa Programme. This programme aims to integrate Māori design principles into key strategies and plans, ensuring Māori values are embedded in urban design projects across Tāmaki Makaurau.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Provide expert Māori urban design input into major projects, including the Auckland Plan 2050 and Auckland Unitary Plan.
  2. Mentor and support the development of Māori design capability within the Urban Design Unit.
  3. Develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with Mana Whenua, Mataawaka, and external stakeholders.
  4. Lead the creation of content for the Māori Design Hub within the Auckland Design Manual, setting best practices for Māori urban design.
  5. Lead and manage the Māori Design Kaupapa Programme, ensuring the integration of Māori design principles into key strategies and plans.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Extensive experience in urban design or a related field, supported by a relevant qualification such as a bachelor's degree in urban planning, landscape architecture, architecture, or an equivalent field.
  • Leadership roles have enhanced your expertise, and you have a deep understanding of Māori design principles, with a strong commitment to creating positive urban outcomes for Māori communities.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, adept at working with diverse stakeholders to integrate Māori design principles into projects.
  • Mentoring and developing teams, coupled with dedication to continuous improvement, will be key to the success of the Urban Design Unit.
